The Jacobs-Wagnerlab is looking for a part-time (20 hours) Lab Assistant I to handle mediacreation, autoclaving of glassware, lab waste removal, and verifying thatemergency eye-wash stations function properly. Upon being trained, the labassistant I should work somewhat independently under the supervision of a researchtechnician or HHMI research specialist.


  • Make routine media, reagents, buffers, and plates. Sterilize,aliquot.
  • Perform basic record-keeping e.g., recording usage of laboratoryequipment and materials, performing data entry, photocopying, logging andlabeling specimens and samples.
  • May collect samples, process, store, and ship non-hazardousmaterials.
  • Order supplies such as reagents (chemicals, agar, etc.) andglassware as appropriate to meet needs.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties such as organizing supply storage,assisting in moving laboratory furniture or equipment, disposing of unwantedequipment as needed.
  • Assist higher level lab employee by holding animals or performingother manual tasks such as setting up apparatus.
  • May provide backup for an absent Glassware Washer.
  • Provide basic care of laboratory animals, including feeding andwatering animals as well as cleaning cages or tanks, according to standardoperating procedures or research protocols.
  • Record food, water, urine or other animal-related measurements.
  • May perform any of the duties described in the LaboratoryGlassware Washer specification or other duties as assigned
  • Adhere to safety rules.

Job Responsibilities

Perform basic laboratory tasks on a day-to-day basis asassigned, and/or carry out minor support or service functions. Initially workis performed under close supervision until it becomes routine. After initialtraining, work is reviewed during progress and/or upon completion. Changes tonormal routine is set by supervisor.

Minimum Education and Experience Required Some familiarity with a laboratory environment helpful but notrequired. Will be trained to do this work.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Required to perform work with a minimum of error and lessday-to-day supervision.
  • Demonstrated initiative and good judgment
  • Basic Arithmetic skills
  • Ability to follow detailed oral and/or written instructions (bothverbal and written) instructions.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform the characteristic duties.
  • Habits of cleanliness and neatness.
  • Demonstrated punctuality and consistent
Physical Requirements
  • Manual dexterity to perform assigned tasks
  • Write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, perform desk basedcomputer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, perform seated work, operate specialmachines
  • Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach /work above shoulders,light fine grasping.
  • Lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.
  • Rarely help move heavier items (e.g. chairs or lab equipment;packages of supplies; drums containing 2 to 15 gallons, depending on ability.
  • In some Glassware Washing operations, occasionally may pull awheeled Glassware cart that weighs approximately 100 pounds.
Working Conditions Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending onresearch, Lab Assistants may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals,gasses, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements andprocedures, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)if required.

Work Standards When conducting university business, must comply with theCalifornia Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.
