University of Virginia office of Advancement seeks a highly organized and motivated Development Associate to manage administrative, data, and stewardship functions for the Miller Center, a nonpartisan think tank at the University of Virginia. The Associate will work closely with the development team in tracking advancement functions, developing and maintaining reports, drafting correspondence, and facilitating effective communication between the advancement team and the Miller Center’s communications, events, and finance teams.

Established in 1975 through a generous gift from entrepreneur and philanthropist Burkett Miller, the Miller Center <millercenter.org> is a nonpartisan affiliate of the University of Virginia that specializes in presidential scholarship, public policy, and political history. It strives to apply the lessons of history and civil discourse to the nation's most pressing contemporary governance challenges. The Miller Center is a supportive community, grounded in diverse perspectives. It values scholarly excellence, civil discourse, and respectful conduct.

Responsibilities Include:

Administrative Support

  • Deposit checks and liaise with University Gift Processing Services for all gift-related transactions, ensuring accurate reporting
  • Use Advance and EverTrue functions and reporting to spearhead prospect strategy and research for Miller Center assigned development officers; analyze data and recommend data-based strategies
  • Maintain organized and up-to-date paper and electronic files
  • Support team travel and reimbursement needs
  • Support the CAO in meeting preparation and donor engagement
  • Staff the Development Committee of the Governing Council and the Miller Center Foundation Board of Trustees
  • Advise and assist the CAO in daily activities
  • Work with the executive office of the Miller Center to support the CEO’s development responsibilities

Foundation Administrator

  • Work with the Chief Advancement Officer and Director of Finance and Administration to support the Miller Center Foundation and its Board of Trustees.
  • Manage charitable state registrations process
  • Ensure compliance with relevant University and Miller Center Foundation policies and procedures

Logistical Support for Miller Center Events

  • Support the Donor Relations Coordinator on invitations for donor meals and receptions
  • Track RSVPs for select events and assist with check in
  • Communicate and collaborate with event lead and communications team as appropriate
  • Interact professionally with donors, particularly at events

Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will thrive in a team-based environment and be motivated by the Miller Center’s mission.
  • A high school diploma with at least one year of related experience is required, bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • Initiative, attention to detail, excellent communications skills, ability to juggle competing priorities, ability to respond efficiently to tasks and requests, and commitment to follow through are essential.
  • Highly proficient computer skills and a willingness to learn new customer management software are essential.
  • Familiarity with the University of Virginia and Advance, the donor management system of record, is preferred.

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings and programs.

This is a restricted position which extends through December 19, 2021. Renewal is possible, subject to performance, availability of funds, and need.
