The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Tobacco Intervention Programs seeks a full-time EHRA non-faculty Associate Director for the Tobacco Prevention and Evaluation Program. The Tobacco Intervention Programs, based in the Department of Family Medicine, are comprised of two administrative units. The Tobacco Prevention and Evaluation Program (TPEP) conducts program evaluation and research designed to prevent tobacco use, tobacco-related addiction, and exposure to secondhand smoke. The Tobacco Treatment Program (TTP) promotes comprehensive tobacco use treatment services through direct patient care, training for providers, and research. The Associate Director position will be based with TPEP.

The Associate Director will primarily be responsible for managing the study protocols for funded research projects, the development of research design, and data collection tools (e.g., survey instruments), data analysis, and interpreting data results. They will use expert judgment to inform research study design and troubleshoot issues that may arise with data quality or other aspects of research projects. Specific to research studies, the Associate Director will maintain databases and ensures compliance with National Institute of Health (NIH), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Institutional Review Board (IRB), and Center protocols and requirements. They will also maintain and enhance knowledge and related skills in research methods, participant recruitment strategies, and stay abreast of emerging tobacco control and regulatory science literature. Specific to evaluation contracts, the Associate Director will work with the Director to ensure staff work efficiently and effectively towards meeting project timelines and develop high quality deliverables and evaluation reports. Additionally, the Associate Director will assist in the management of the Tobacco Prevention and Evaluation Program summer internship program, managing the application and selection process, coordinating summer internship projects, and providing supervision for summer interns. In partnership with the Director, the Associate Director will be responsible for seeking and cultivating potential partnerships and assisting staff in writing proposals.

Additionally, the Associate Director will develop academic manuscripts and presentations as a lead or co-author, represent TPEP at state and national meetings/conference, and serve as the primary presenter for project related dissemination.

Educational Requirements

A Master’s Degree in public health or a similar field is required, plus a minimum of five years of managing evaluation and research projects. Must have project management experience, including coordinating, planning, and implementing complex public health research projects.

Qualifications and Experience

This position requires demonstrated strong public health research skills, such as reviewing scientific literature, creating data collection instruments, managing databases, administrating IRB applications and protocols. This position requires demonstrated capacity to independently manage multiple aspects associated with large research studies. Demonstrated proficiency and sufficient experience with statistical software such as SAS and or SPSS are required. Strong project management, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills. The ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities and activities, ability to handle multiple ongoing project activities with attention to detail, and ability to prioritize activities accordingly to ensure that work gets done in a timely manner. Experience in tobacco control policy research and tobacco regulatory science is preferred. Experience with supervising research staff and/or interns is desired.
