Position Summary

The Department of Philosophy at Michigan State University invites applications for a tenure-system, academic-year appointment at the rank of assistant or associate professor, beginning August 16, 2020. Area of specialization: Feminist bioethics. Areas of competence: Open. The ideal candidate’s research will complement existing departmental strengths, for example, by taking an empirically-informed approach to bioethics or focusing on social justice issues related to health and health care. A PhD in Philosophy or a closely allied field prior to appointment is required. The candidate should be prepared to teach philosophy courses at the undergraduate and graduate level (four courses/year), as well as participate in thesis supervision and engage in service on- and off-campus. The successful candidate will have a robust research program established at the time of hiring. Candidates should be committed to teaching a diverse student body.

Our research strengths include environmental philosophy and ethics, socially engaged philosophy of science, and bioethics in philosophy of medicine and agriculture (including food justice) and we have a commitment to feminist philosophical approaches in all of these areas. The Department is home to MSU’s Center for Interdisciplinarity and has a longstanding relationship with the Center for Ethics and Humanities in the Life Sciences. It is also the editorial home of the International Journal of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics.

Minimum Requirements

e) a statement of research that addresses how your research program contributes to the departmental commitment to engaged philosophy;

f) a writing sample.

Applicants at the level of Associate Professor should provide information for four potential referees of equal or higher rank; applicants at the level of Assistant Professor should provide information for three potential referees of equal or higher rank.
