Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, will serve on-call

Job Summary: The Associate Director of the Counseling Center oversees the outreach and consultation services to members of the University community, and, as needed, training to students in the mental health professions.

Additional Department Summary: The Associate Director of Clinical and Outreach Services provides oversight for clinical and outreach services at The University of Alabama Counseling Center. The Associate Director will work closely with and provide direct oversight to our coordinators in these areas. This position also provides exciting opportunities to be involved in growing the center’s services. Specifically, the AD will be closely involved in working toward developing an internship program for psychologists, with an end goal of achieving APA accreditation. The Associate Director will provide direct counseling services to enrolled University students, outreach and consultation services to members of the University community, and, as needed, supervision to students in the mental health professions. This position is expected to rotate on-call throughout the year for the purpose of crisis intervention services. It is understood that the Associate Director will make adjustments in their work schedule during low clinical utilization periods, such that outreach and consultation services may require a larger percentage of their time than what is outlined. By the same token, during high clinical utilization periods clinical duties may require a larger portion of time than what is reflected. This position requires a high degree of sophistication of thought and creativity. The Associate Director routinely works with people in distress and encounters life-threatening emergencies. Such situations call for excellent judgment, effective problem solving, and a thorough knowledge of the myriad factors behind the resolution of psychological problems. In the absence of the Executive Director, the Associate Director may serve as their delegate. The Associate Director is responsible for completing required training that is related to laws and regulations, that creates a more hospitable and respectful workplace; and safer work environment. The Associated Director has personal accountability for financial reporting and responsibility for establishing, enforcing, and following internal processes and controls as outlined in UA policies and procedures.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology from an APA approved program and three (3) years practice in a clinical setting, preferably in a university or college environment. Must be licensed as a Psychologist in the state of Alabama or license-eligible and attain licensure within one year of employment.

Skills and Knowledge: The Associate Director must possess excellent interpersonal skills, communication, advocacy, and mental health intervention skills. Superior skills in the area of time and task management, including the use or departmental resources to stay up to date on student needs. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work flexible and evening hours. Ability to work with diverse populations. Demonstrated use of sound judgment and competence in managing critical incidents and communications with others. This position requires basic computer skills such as word processing and email, and the ability to effectively interact with University community members. Demonstrated commitment to expand multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills as evidenced through: demonstrating self awareness; understanding and valuing others; demonstrating knowledge of social inequalities; interacting effectively with a diversity of people; fostering equity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications: A Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA approved program. College or University counseling center experience preferred, with demonstrated increase in administrative responsibility, particularly in the areas of outreach and/or clinical services.
