Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
The Department of World Languages and Cultures (WOLC) and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) invite applications for two (2) dynamic full-time tenure-track faculty members in Spanish at the rank of Assistant Professor. The required teaching load is 6 courses annually and consists of teaching Spanish language and culture-related courses in Spanish or English (with online and face-to-face delivery) at the elementary, intermediate, advanced, and graduate levels. The start date for both positions is August 2020. Teaching responsibilities are both at the main SHSU campus in Huntsville, Texas (located 70 miles north of Houston) and online. Educational Requirements for the Position
Qualifications: Position 1: Candidates must have an earned PhD by August 2020 in Spanish applied linguistics or related field (e.g., second language pedagogy, languages in contact, bilingualism/multilingualism, Hispanic studies, language-learning technology, etc.) with documented interest and/or expertise in Spanish for professional purposes. Candidates who are ABD at the time of application must have a scheduled defense before August 2020 for their application to be considered. Candidates with strong interest in or demonstrated expertise in Spanish for professional purposes, such as healthcare, criminal justice, or business, are especially encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to candidates who have knowledge of and/or experience with second language acquisition, Spanish for heritage speakers, and/or Hispanic-serving institutions. Position 2: Candidates must have an earned PhD by August 2020 in Spanish applied linguistics or related field (e.g., bilingualism/multilingualism, languages in contact, etc.) with documented interest and/or expertise in Spanish interpretation/translation. Candidates who are ABD at the time of application must have a scheduled defense before August 2020 for their application to be considered. Candidates with strong interest in or demonstrated expertise in Spanish interpretation or translation are especially encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to candidates who have knowledge of and/or experience with Spanish for heritage speakers, US varieties of Spanish, and/or developing community outreach through internships or service learning opportunities.

Additional Preferences for Both Positions: Expertise/promise in applying new technologies to teaching language and culture. Exceptional interpersonal and collaborative skills.
