Job Details

Overview

The Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory is seeking a full-time scientist to theoretically and numerically study the edge radial electric field. This position is at the rank of Associate Research Physicist (equivalent to a postdoctoral position).

Responsibilities

The edge radial electric field Er is believed to strongly affect edge stability and transport properties, which are of critical importance for the viability of fusion energy. The successful applicant will work closely with PPPL theorists to develop simplified models of edge Er, using analyticaltheory as well as extreme-scale numerical simulations with the XGC family of codes. The work will include the development and application of numerical diagnostics to clarify the physical mechanisms that determine Er. Consideration of experimental application and interaction with PPPL experimentalists are encouraged. The successful candidate will be expected to develop, present, and publish novel physical results resulting from the work.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in plasma physics or a related discipline.
  • Familiarity with tokamak edge physics, particle-in-cell gyrokinetic simulation, and parallel computing is desirable.

Required:

  • Strong theoretical and mathematical aptitude.
  • English communication and writing skills.
  • Teamwork is essential.

Qualified applicants should apply and send a curriculum vitae and bibliography. Three letters of recommendation will be requested from finalists.

Letters can be mailed to T. Stolzfus-Dueck, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, James Forrestal Campus, P.O. Box 451, Princeton, New Jersey 08543 or emailed to tstoltzf@pppl.gov. The deadline for ensuring full consideration is Jan. 15, 2020. However, applications after this date may be considered until the position is filled.
