The Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering (MME) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (http://engineering.unl.edu/mme) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of additive manufacturing of metals, ceramics, polymers, or biomaterials.

The UNL College of Engineering is undergoing an exciting period of significant growth with two major building projects underway. A major focus of the college’s teaching, research and outreach enterprise in the coming decade is on developing manufacturing science and engineering, including the manufacture of equipment, devices and components. To this end, we have established the Nebraska Engineering Additive Technologies (NEAT) lab (https://engineering.unl.edu/NEAT/) which houses multiple metal AM and bioprinting capabilities. Consequently, the College is seeking to hire a multidisciplinary group of faculty with complementary expertise.

This position calls for candidates with demonstrated expertise in additive manufacturing and biomanufacturing. Specific areas of interest include: (1) adaptive capabilities for customization and rapid deployment of new processes; (2) discovery of new materials; (3) sensing, monitoring and computational modeling of material structure-process-property phenomena at multiple length scales; (4) predictive tools for characterizing process behavior and fabricated product; and (5) leveraging unusual material and mechanical behavior for cutting edge applications.

The Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering consists of approximately 35 tenure/tenure-track faculty, 700 undergraduate students, and 110 graduate students. In addition to manufacturing, faculty research priority areas include energy, nanoengineering, and biomedical engineering. An outstanding infrastructure exists for conducting research, including central facilities housing state-of-the-art instrumentation within the Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience (https://ncmn.unl.edu/central-facilities) and the Nanoengineering Research Core Facility (https://engineering.unl.edu/nercf/), which comprise the NSF-funded Nebraska Nanoscale Facility. Collaborations across disciplines are encouraged, especially with the University of Nebraska Medical Center and through the various state- and federally-funded research centers and programs on campus such as the Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior; Center for Biotechnology; Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research; and the NSF-funded Materials Research Science and Engineering Center P-SPINS.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. or equivalent in mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, or a closely related field. Applicants must have a record of strong scholarly achievement and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education. Candidates at the assistant professor level must have the potential to establish a strong externally funded research program, while candidates at the associate professor level are expected to have an outstanding publication record, a history of funded research and a strong national/international reputation.
