Biomedical Informatics is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of biology, medicine, and quantitative sciences. Biomedical informatics researchers develop new methods to integrate and analyze vast amounts of data generated in the laboratory, clinical and translational research, clinical encounters, and population studies.

The goals of the Department of Biomedical Informatics are to (1) promote excellence in biomedical informatics research, (2) collaborate with biomedical researchers in developing new quantitative methods that enable the formulation and testing of original hypotheses, (3) train the next generation of biomedical informatics specialists, and (4) interface with engineering, mathematics, information and computer science communities, serving as a hub for quantitative scientists focused on biomedical research.

This department leads multiple federally and non-profit funded biomedical research projects, which are focused on the integration, analysis, and sharing of biomedical and health care data for the scientific community, as well as patient-centered research. In addition, the department runs a complex computational infrastructure that allows access and analysis of these data in a privacy-preserving manner.

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced bioinformatics programming professional with a broad understanding of computational algorithms; identifies and resolves a wide range of issues/software bugs. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Operates independently. Responsible for the development and deployment of computational tools and machine learning models for analysis of healthcare data. Experience with programming languages including Python, MATLAB, C.

  • A Bachelor's Degree in biological science, computational/programming, or related area; and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • Three (3+) or more years of relevant experience in application of deep learning models to clinical and healthcare data.

  • Proven experience in Predictive analytics in Healthcare, Applied Deep Learning, Google Cloud – ML Engine, Streaming analytics, Signal Processing, and Multivariate time series.

  • Advanced familiarity with Deep Learning and Machine Learning Libraries such as TensorFlow and PyTorch.

  • Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development and data structures. Experience with Python, MATLAB, and C.

  • Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics programming design, modification and implementation.

  • Demonstrated understanding of relational databases, web interfaces, and operating systems.

  • Strong project management skills.

  • Thorough knowledge of modern biology and applicable field of research.

  • Thorough knowledge of web, application and data security concepts and methods.

  • Demonstrated experience with programming tools and technologies including Hidden Markov Model Toolkit (HTK).

  • Strong communication skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel in multiple fields of expertise and at various levels in the organization.

  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner. Ability to interface with management on a regular basis.

  • Self motivated, work independently or as part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem solving skills.


Familiarity with cloud computing (GCP, AWS).
