DESCRIPTION

The UC San Diego Department of Economics is among the top 20% of ranked Ph.D. programs according to the National Research Council's assessment of doctoral programs in the U.S.. The Department has over 1800 undergraduate majors, 190 minors, and serves more than 14,000 enrollments annually. Currently there are 40 ladder-rank faculty, 130 graduate students, and 12 administrative staff members.

Applies professional Student Services concepts. Provides varied student services to students, faculty, and department / school / college management. Works on moderately complex issues. Receives assistance on more complex issues.

Under supervision of the Director of Student Affairs, this position serves as one of a team of undergraduate advisors and is responsible for undergraduate advising, administration, academic enrichment programs and their development, as well as instructional support services for the Department of Economics Undergraduate Program.

In this capacity, the position serves as a professional staff advisor in all areas of academic advising for students as well as providing direct support to the Department’s undergraduate program and instructional services. In coordination with the other Economics undergraduate advising staff, provide support or independently manage various aspects of the program and curriculum including but not limited to the following: counseling prospective and continuing students, and faculty, individually and in groups; analyzing and evaluating requirements for students;

Analyzing, interpreting and implementing Department and University policies. Planning and managing enrichment programming; providing support for complex undergraduate economics course and exam accommodation for students registered with the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD); coordination of the schedule of classes; coordination of the Honors program; supporting the Department’s tutoring labs, and Undergraduate Teaching Apprentice programs. Position collaborates with department leadership to determine short and long term needs and goals for the Department’s undergraduate academic enrichment and instructional programs.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Proven experience in academic advising and in a Student Affairs operation. Ability to effectively advise and work closely with undergraduate students.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Ability to analyze complex situations and data and to develop clear and concise reports and recommendations.

  • Thorough knowledge of University processes and procedures; understanding of University rules and regulations.

  • Familiarity with regulations pertaining to and support services available for undergraduate students. Knowledge of campus-wide resources such as (but not limited to) the Office of Students with Disabilities, Psychological and Counseling Services, Financial Aid and the Health Clinic.

  • Demonstrated skill in problem solving, conflict resolution and crisis intervention. Ability to maintain poise and uphold confidentiality in delicate situations.

  • Proven record management experience. Skill in establishing and maintaining accurate, organized records, files and filing system. Knowledge of university reporting requirements and records retention regulations.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively network and build coalitions. Excellent interpersonal skills exhibiting tact, diplomacy, flexibility and courtesy in a professional manner.

  • Proficient computer skills utilizing spreadsheet, word processing and database software, internet browsers, web based systems and email software. Knowledge of University-specific computer programs and pertinent databases.

  • Ability and initiative to manage multiple programmatic activities. Ability to balance multiple, often conflicting, priorities with deadline constraints and numerous interruptions.

  • Ability to interact with and clarify procedures for faculty by means of collecting, researching and orchestrating the implementation of new and existing policies. Sensitivity to faculty issues.

  • Strong independent decision-making skills. Effective problem-solving skills; ability to identify, research, and analyze complex situations, recommend solutions and determine action steps to be taken to effect resolutions.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a highly computerized, high volume team-oriented environment, exercising good judgment, creativity and initiative in performance of job responsibilities.

  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
