The Academic Coordinator provides academic support and services to all student athletes including academic advising, study and life skills development, and coordination of study hall and tutoring services. This position works with staff, coaches and student-athletes to achieve department goals. Assisting in the overall maintenance and coordination of Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS), this position is responsible for all facets of the SASS tutoring service for student-athletes. It is imperative this position identifies and understands student-athletes’ academic needs and has the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with student-athletes, coaches, staff and faculty. Additionally, this position assists with data management of progress reports, grades, study hall and other academic information to help with the delivery of academic support services.

Minimum Requirements

Master’s degree with 1-2 years of experience in the field

List the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position

•Knowledge of effective learning strategies, assessment tools, motivational technique and student skill development
•Demonstrated ability to build trust and strong professional interpersonal relationships with student-athletes
•Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and process confidential information with utmost discretion
•Experience in education or a field of study that enhances the individual’s ability to assist at-risk-student-athletes in an academic environment
•Demonstrate a student-centered approach to learning
•Familiarity with FERPA guidelines
•Advising experience in an intercollegiate athletics environment
•Knowledge of NCAA continuing eligibility, CAA and university rules and regulations is necessary
•Effective interpersonal skills
•Ability to work occasional nights and occasionally on the weekend

Preferred formal education, professional skills and work experience

•Earned Masters degree from an accredited institution
•Experience working with culturally diverse populations a plus
•At least 3 years of experience working in the academic support for athletes field

The UNCW Department of Athletics sponsors 19 varsity sports and competes in the NCAA Division I as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association.
