University of Pennsylvania Libraries seeks an energetic and organized individual to support the research, teaching and learning mission of the Libraries by participating in the workflow related to managing the life cycle of the Libraries’ electronic resources, including acquisition, licensing, discovery, access, maintenance, and evaluation.

Part of the Collections Directorate, the Acquisitions, Access and Licensing (AAL) Department at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries invites applicants for an eResource Acquisitions & Licensing Librarian. Reporting to the Head of eResources and Licensing, the position focuses on the acquisition and licensing of the content meant to support the teaching and research mission of the University and to ensure students, faculty, and staff have consistent access to the broad range of scholarly and research resources provided through the University Libraries. The AAL department encompasses a host of collection, fiscal and access-related work, aside from licensing and acquisitions of materials in all formats, the department focuses on the entire lifecycle of eresources including cataloging and metadata creation and support.

We seek a motivated eResource Acquisitions & Licensing Librarian to take a lead role in overseeing the operations in a broad range of activities related to the licensing and acquisition of electronic, digital, and continuing resources purchased for the University of Pennsylvania Library system. The eResource Acquisitions & Licensing Librarian organizes, analyzes, and solves problems creatively, flexibly, and resourcefully. The incoming candidate will be one who successfully works both independently and collaboratively, takes initiative, and follows through effectively.

DUTIES: (Description should be brief and only include principle duties.)

  • Collaborating with, AAL librarians, the Libraries’ Collection Development Council, entities on campus, including Central Purchasing, and consortia, including the Pennsylvania Academic Libraries Consortium (PALCI), Lyrasis, the Center for Research Libraries, and the NorthEast Research Libraries Consortium (NERL), collectively negotiate for favorable contract terms for complex and high spend eresource licenses.
  • Negotiating with vendors to obtain favorable license terms for pricing and access terms. Monitoring license agreement processing within the department and with the University’s Purchasing Department.
  • Collaborating with consortia, including the Pennsylvania Academic Libraries Consortium (PALCI), Lyrasis, the Center for Research Libraries, and the NorthEast Research Libraries Consortium (NERL), negotiate, purchase and renew licensed eresources.
  • Providing effective management of licensed packages, orders, and entitlements by coordinating work internally, with other AAL units and Library departments, and externally, with resource providers, vendors, and publishers.
  • Coordinating library resource licensing, purchase, renewal or cancellation workflows and decisions with library collection specialists, vendors, publishers, consortia, and appropriate user communities.
  • Creating, maintaining, and developing methods for collection and compilation of resource usage and cost analytics statistics to support and inform collection development and budgetary decisions.
  • Participating in the recommendation and implementation of new approaches to electronic resource management, including facilitating the seamless delivery of information supporting research and learning.
  • Participating in the responsible stewardship of the collections budget.

QUALIFICATIONS: (Qualifications should clearly indicate those that are required and those that are preferred.)

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Three to five years relevant professional library experience.
  • Experience acquiring eresources, preferably within the context of an academic or research library.
  • Experience participating in license negotiation and workflows. Knowledge of national licensing trends and issues related to contract and license negotiation, interpretation and review highly desired.
  • Experience with various modules of an integrated library system as they relate to e-resources management and acquisitions, experience with Alma highly desired.
