The Department of Art + Design is a department that values interdisciplinary perspectives and experimental inquiry through making. We encourage cross-disciplinary collaborations, questioning traditional practices, and exploring the future of the virtual and material world. We offer a Bachelor of Art + Design, studio based, a Master of Art + Design, studio based, and a Bachelor of Arts in Design Studies, which is a non-studio based liberal arts degree. With these distinct tracks we encourage overlap and cross-disciplinary work among students and faculty. We produce students who push the boundaries of experimental media in the pursuit of unique and innovative design paths.

The Department of Art + Design is uniquely situated at NC State University in the College of Design in Raleigh, NC—voted top 10 most livable cities by USA Today (USAToday, 2017). Additionally, the College of Design is home to two doctoral programs, a PhD in Design and a Doctor of Design, providing conduits for advanced study across disciplinary boundaries.

Essential Job Duties

The College of Design, Department of Art + Design seeks a full-time tenure track faculty position in Animation and New Media at the Assistant Professor rank. The person we seek will be a digital or concept artist who can work in a full range of digital techniques.

Applicant will have a strong grasp of both technical and conceptual aspects of emerging computational media environments, and have mastering software development, proficiency of creative applications in data visualization, serious gaming and visual narratives.

Applicant should have the capacity to teach a range of courses including animation, interactive media, intermediate to advanced drawing systems and rapid visualization, and art and design foundations.

Applicant will teach both undergraduate and graduate students, participate on graduate committees, and actively pursue their own participate in personal scholarly research, and design and artistic work, and publish/exhibit in prominent public venues appropriate to the domain.

Applicants should display evidence of challenging work in addressing issues of art and design and the society at large.

Applicants who are working at the intersection of the digital and tangible, and with immersive, augmented, and hybrid media forms are encouraged to apply.

Applicant will also participate in the further development of Animation and New Media within the Department.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Additional responsibilities include advising graduate research, project and dissertation preparation, continued development of the Animation/New Media Programs, and facilitation of student learning at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Participate in departmental service, student advising, curriculum development, admissions advising, student events and other collective initiatives.

Minimum Education/Experience

M.F.A. in media arts or equivalent degree with professional experience in the field of motion graphics, animation, film and/or game design.

Departmental Required Skills

Ability to teach traditional and digital media with emphasis on illustration, painting, modeling, lighting, and animation

Applicant should possess a strong technical grounding in design fundamentals, design process, and creative problem solving.

Extensive knowledge of animation, critical theory, critique skills, and good interpersonal communication skills

Familiar with motion graphics with proficiency in After Effects and one or more of the following: Flash, Maya, Cinema 4D, Action Script, or other language for interactive media

Applicants must have knowledge of new media theory, design process, and creative problem solving as it pertains to new media and animation.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

2 – 3 years of teaching digital techniques

Demonstrated ability to create, direct, and collaborate on projects that include 3-D animation, 2-D animation, and interactive media design.

Proficiency in drawing and illustration skills
