DepartmentThe Donnelly Centre in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto invites applications for the position of Research Associate (Limited Term) to oversee the design and application of new CRISPR-based tools for functional genomics. The candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the development and execution of this research project, including experimental design, planning, data analysis and presentation.

CampusThe position requires a Ph.D. degree in Life Sciences with a minimum of 4-6 years postdoctoral experience. Experience in genome engineering, high-throughput sequencing, molecular cloning, genetic interaction mapping, tissue culture, biochemistry and cancer research is expected. The candidate will be required to present his/her work to the Principal Investigator and other members of the research team. He/she must have a demonstrated ability to work independently and direct projects and have a publication record in the field of functional genomics, CRISPR technologies, genome engineering, biochemistry and cancer research. The candidate will be responsible for leading a team of 2-4 people and should have some previous supervisory experience. Furthermore, the position will include the project management for ongoing collaborations with private companies.

Duties:
The candidate will use and develop CRISPR-based tools to establish novel functional genomics strategies in the Donnelly Centre. This project involves conceiving and performing original research towards developing novel genome engineering tools that afford multiplexed gene targeting and genetic interaction mapping. This project will require experience in interdisciplinary methodologies including molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, metabolism research and cancer biology. The project will also require building and supervising a small team towards further developing CRISPR-based genetic screening tools. The candidate will be responsible for carrying out independent research consistent with the goals of the program and for providing day-to-day direction to a team of researchers, including students and technicians. The candidate will liaise with collaborators and assist in the compilation, analysis and reporting of research findings to researchers within and outside of the program. Previous experience in management of collaborations with the private sector are desired. Other requirements for the position include performing experiments requiring extensive experience in functional genomics including the mapping of fitness genes and genetic interactions, high-throughput screening, CRISPR technology, biochemistry, tissue culture, Illumina-sequencing and molecular cloning as evident by upcoming or past publications in top-tier journals.


Key Responsibilities:
•Developing and using CRISPR-based molecular tools for functional genomics applications in mammalian cells;
•Assay design and validation of new molecular tools using cell biological, biochemical and molecular biological methods (including but not limited to tissue culture, retroviral vector design, library construction, transduction optimization)
•Designing, planning and executing research projects;
•Supervising research staff;
•Preparing and contributing to manuscripts for publication and presenting research findings at academic conferences;
• Working with multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional teams;
• Co-ordinating with other project leaders, PIs and collaborators;
•Project management of industrial collaborations;
•Data analysis and reporting;
•Ensuring project goals are met within the context of the larger program;

Beyond these responsibilities, the individual may be expected to participate in the preparation of grant applications and research supervision of two or more students or other trainees. Therefore, it is required that the successful candidate has been previously awarded multiple research fellowships and awards demonstrating his/her ability to acquire external funding. At all times, the individual is expected to support the overall research and teaching missions of the host lab. The candidate will be expected to perform research with a high degree of independence and will design, direct, execute, analyze and present in written and oral forms novel investigative studies that build on and/or take advantage of the resources and expertise within the host lab as well as candidate’s academic expertise. As such, the successful candidate should have delivered multiple talks at international conferences and have first-author publications in top-tier journals.
