Description

The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), is an advanced practice nurse who is responsible for the assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation of nurse midwifery care delivered to antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and gyn patients in the Lewis Katz School of Medicine’s OB/GYN department.

   

The CNM practice includes primary and specialized care at Temple University Hospital. The CNM promotes safety and quality in clinical care, participates in related research and contributes to teaching. The CNM provides care to women while following the American College of Nurse Midwives Code of Ethics, maintains the Core Competencies for Basic Midwifery Practice in accordance with the Standards for the Practice of Midwifery. The CNM provides direct clinical services and care for women across the lifespan. The CNM practice is directed by their standing orders, policies, procedures and protocols and CNM clinical practice guidelines. The CNM has a collaborative practice agreement with an OB/GYN physician colleague in compliance with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania licensure requirements. The mutually agreed up written practice guidelines define the parameters for consultation, collaboration and referral.

 

Responsibilities include: performing physical exams, collecting and documenting data, managing labor and spontaneous delivery, providing post-partum care, conducting diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ordering and interpreting laboratory studies, imaging studies, professional consultations and prescribes appropriate interventions and medications; providing general OB/GYN services: health and wellness counseling, physical exams including Pap testing, pregnancy testing and antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care and education; may be assigned to post-partum ward, L&D and triage; caring of patients in the postpartum floor to include lactation services; intrapartum care including deliveries for low risk patients; obstetrical triage as assigned; performing health assessments, including a history and physical exam, ordering and performing diagnostic tests, evaluating psychosocial and family circumstances to complete the general health assessment and diagnosis the nature of common acute and chronic conditions; recording patient history and physical exams in the medical record through various means in a legible and timely manner; preparing patient workups and summaries noting pertinent findings; ordering and scheduling laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explaining necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to patients with documentation of such; writing orders for testing as well as prescriptive therapy; interpreting all ordered test results; prescribing approved medications as per standing orders or protocols; performing vaccinations when necessary; discussing medical and surgical options for conditions and referring to physician colleagues when appropriate; providing postoperative care including wound assessment and staple removal; managing common acute and chronic illness including minor trauma, episodic problems, common chronic disorders as well as counseling and education with regard to such problems and performs minor surgical procedures (based on demonstrated competency); referring, collaborating or co-managing with collaborating physician(s) on complex and high priority cases with regard to complicated diagnostic problems, serious illness, complicated therapeutic problems, reevaluation of chronic conditions etc.; demonstrating leadership; working as a member of the practice health team, assisting in education of patients, staff members and the target community in preventive health care and health maintenance including lactation; ensuring that education is appropriate to the patient's age, developmental status, disability, culture and ethnicity; assisting office and hospital staff in patient triage when appropriate; serving as a role model for professional development of co-workers and others; demonstrating patterns of continued learning to facilitate professional growth; analyzing new knowledge gained from conferences, workshops, professional literature or "hands-on training" and assimilates this knowledge into clinical practice; demonstrating a commitment to a healthy and safe work environment; maintaining patient caseload, participating in on call as required by the practice; responding to pages within required timeframe to allow for communication with staff and patients; completing bi-annual CPR recertification and annual Fire-Safety Training for professional clinical staff with Practice Supervisor; maintaining CME requirements and follows hospital and departmental guidelines for reappointment; competently operates all medical and office equipment; performing blood draws as well as initiating and managing IV therapies and obtaining a collaborative practice agreement with designated physician(s) and agree to an assignment of benefits under assigned physician's payer contracts for services rendered in the practice. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education and Experience:

Licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a Registered Professional Nurse and Advanced Practice Nurse: Certified Nurse Midwife. Certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives. Controlled substance and DEA license.

   

Required Skills and Abilities:

*Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a diverse population of staff, patients, faculty.

*Demonstrated expertise in word processing, data collection and MS Office suite.

*Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

*Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a team.

*Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with members of the medical staff, nursing colleagues and other paraprofessionals.

 

Preferred:

*Master’s degree in nursing.

*Two years clinical experience in OB/GYN with a minimum of one (1) year experience as an APN preferred.
