Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (ChEE)

The Chemical Engineering Program of the College of Engineering and Applied Science of the University of Cincinnati invites applicants for a Lab Associate. The selected candidate will be responsible for academic laboratories in the Chemical Engineering Program and is under the direct supervision of the Head of the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. The Lab Associate is expected to support a wide variety of new and existing lab-scale to pilot-scale instrumentation and equipment utilized to educate students in Chemical Engineering Unit Operations.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintain safe, clean, and functional laboratory facilities.
  • Plan, develop, and coordinate the safety program for the laboratories.
  • Maintain, operate, and train others to use lab- and pilot- scale equipment in Chemical Engineering Unit Operations, including the use of computer-based data acquisition and process control.
  • Oversee operation, maintenance, and repair of instrumentation and equipment.
  • Order parts/chemicals and maintain inventory for laboratories.
  • Participate in laboratory instrumentation and equipment setup, safety orientation, and documentation.
  • Attend assigned University compliance training as communicated by the University, College of Engineering and Applied Science, or the Department Head.
  • Provide technical support for academic or research projects as directed by the Department Head.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree engineering or chemical technology or other scientific field with one (1) year experience; -OR- three (3) years experience. Experience must be include:
  • The set-up, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical and mechanical instrumentation and equipment.
  • The use of computers and basic engineering data acquisition software packages.
  • Knowledge of current laboratory safety and OSHA standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to learn different engineering software packages.
  • Experience using process control software packages
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

The Chemical Engineering Program offers undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering and is one of the earliest established programs in the country. The College of Engineering at UC has pioneered the mandatory cooperative experience for engineers since 1906 and has excellent relations with the industrial sector. The Chemical Engineering program has 18 full-time faculty, about 50 full-time graduate students and over 600 undergraduate students. The external funding for research and education is over 3 million per year; the program has well equipped research and teaching laboratories that occupy over 120,000 square feet of space.
