Director of Annual Giving

DescriptionPosition Summary:
The Office of Advancement (Central Advancement) for the University of Colorado System works closely to support the missions of the four University of Colorado campuses (Anschutz Medical Campus, Boulder, Colorado Springs, and Denver). The division consists of about 60 individuals, and works with each of the four campus Advancement offices as well as Advancement colleagues employed by the University of Colorado Foundation.

The Central Advancement Director of Annual Giving secures new, recurring, and upgraded gifts under the $25,000 level by closely partnering with each campus Advancement team to support the achievement of their identified key performance indicators, and by leveraging traditional and innovative outreach channels, such as phone, crowdfunding, direct mail, and digital/online.

The Director manages a team of individuals, some of whom are embedded within campus Advancement teams. The Central Annual Giving team focuses on building expertise specific to the annual giving industry in order to provide exceptional service to the campuses and to identify multi-campus resource efficiencies.

In addition, Central Annual Giving champions data-driven decision making, providing each campus with the tools and information needed to understand and address their unique Annual Giving challenges and priorities. This position reports to the Assistant Vice President of Gift Planning and Annual Giving and is Exempt from the State of Colorado Classified Staff system.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Duties and Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

Management:
  • Provides oversight, hiring, training, and performance management of two campus-based program managers, two centrally-based production program managers, and one program coordinator.
  • Leads the team’s industry expertise by staying up-to-date on philanthropic trends, and by encouraging team members to pursue, discuss, and recommend new tools or efforts specific to Annual Giving.
  • Develops team members by providing regular feedback and guiding professional growth opportunities.
  • Supports team members by evaluating their efforts for effectiveness, accuracy, and customer/colleague satisfaction.
  • Aligns and collaborates with other CU team members, campus-based departments, and the CU Foundation, in areas such as marketing, digital engagement, analytics, compliance, gifts, records, etc.
  • Prepares and monitors the Central Advancement Annual Giving budget.
  • Builds upon the team’s positive and collaborative culture.
Cross-Campus Collaboration and Customer Service:
  • Provides tools that enable partners across CU to share and coordinate Annual Giving activities, such as calendars, listservs, trainings, meetings, etc.
  • Implements the agreed-upon baseline of Annual Giving activities that are shared across CU (described within a system-wide Memorandum of Understanding).
  • Oversees a three-call-center phone program in partnership with vendor RNL, provides a customizable crowdfunding portal in partnership with vendor Community Funded, and sends select university-wide direct mail and digital appeals.
  • Manages large-scale vendor relationships, including contract management and renewal.
  • Supports the pursuit of each campus’ Annual Giving key performance indicators, as appropriate.
  • Supports the creation and implementation of campus-specific annual operating plans, as appropriate.
Data:
  • Supports comprehensive Annual Giving data-analysis efforts, partnering with both Blackbaud’s donorCentrics product and with CU Central Advancement data analytics teams.
  • Pursues data-specific Annual Giving efforts that benefit CU, such as integrating new technologies or improving data quality.
  • Provides data segmentation, analysis, and reports to support identified campus objectives.
  • Leads the Annual Giving efforts necessary to transition to a new donor platform.

To be successful in this position, candidates will need the following:
  • Knowledge of Annual Giving and fundraising efforts within complex organizations.
  • Skilled in and ability to lead and manage employees and a team effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other University Personnel, and the public.
  • Knowledge of and ability to understand data, data trends, and data analysis to create strategies and make decisions.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure, to manage concurrent tasks and responsibilities, and to deal with changing priorities, while maintaining personal effectiveness.
  • Ability to complete thorough and accurate research and appropriately apply information to projects.
  • Skilled in and ability to utilize Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
Who we are: System Administration, which also houses the Office of the President, is located in the uptown neighborhood of Denver with an office in Broomfield and a few smaller offices located on the campuses. However, this position is located in Broomfield. Many of our departments support the educational and research missions of the four University of Colorado campuses. QualificationsMinimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education or equivalent experience (education requirement may be substituted by professional experience on a year for year basis).
  • Five (5) years experience fundraising in a higher education, nonprofit, or medical setting.
  • Five (5) years experience utilizing annual giving data to create strategies, goals, and outcomes.
  • Two (2) years of experience in a supervisory role.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Experience leading a program from concept and strategy to execution and analysis.
  • Experience securing buy-in and support from stakeholders.
