POSITION DESCRIPTION

The University of Miami School of Law invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate/Assistant Dean of Admissions and Enrollment Management. The Associate/Assistant Dean will be a personable and approachable leader, organized and enthusiastic about working in an innovative and data-driven environment.

Associate/Assistant Dean of Admissions and Enrollment Management (commensurate with experience and qualifications).

ABOUT MIAMI LAW:

Miami Law’s highly talented and diverse student body comprises 1,200 students in JD and LLM programs. Known for its innovative curriculum and clinics, the faculty includes nationally recognized experts in criminal law, intellectual property and cyber law, business and tax, and international law. POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting directly to the Dean of Miami Law, the Associate/Assistant Dean of Admissions and Enrollment Management is responsible for the overall supervision of the Offices of Admissions and Enrollment Management and Student Recruitment, and for promoting and undertaking all necessary interactions between the Offices of Admissions and Student Recruitment and other offices within the School of Law and the University in matters of recruitment, admissions, enrollment, and retention. The Associate/Assistant Dean is involved in strategic enrollment planning activities and goals, identification of the School’s markets, and implementation of marketing plans to achieve enrollment goals. Working under guidelines set by the Dean and the Admissions Committee, the Associate/Assistant Dean uses excellent and independent judgment to determine admissions decisions for 3,000 to 5,000 applicants in order to achieve a diverse and academically talented body of first-year JD and transfer students; uses analytical and modeling skills and experience to interpret statistical data and projections; and maintains and updates the management information system regarding recruitment and admissions processing. The Associate/Assistant Dean supervises a team of 12 full-time employees (direct and indirect reports) within the Admissions and Student Recruitment Offices.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide leadership, vision, and direction for the Office of Admissions and Enrollment Management and the Office of Student Recruitment. Manage and supervise admissions and recruitment staff.
  • Oversee the admissions processing of 3,000-5,000 JD and transfer applicants.
  • Work with the Dean and the Admissions Committee to develop admissions and scholarship parameters.
  • Develop prediction models for admissions and scholarship yields at each stage of the admissions cycle.
  • Develop and implement effective diversity recruitment and admissions strategies.
  • Utilize reporting to inform a continuous improvement model that drives attracting and selecting the most academically talented and diverse students. Produce, maintain, and interpret enrollment management statistical reports and yield projections.
  • Oversee the operations of the application evaluation process, ensuring that admission decisions are rendered appropriately and in a timely fashion. Evaluate and develop procedural systems to improve processes and statistical information gathering. Work closely with MIS personnel, both in the School of Law and other University departments, to ensure efficient use of recruitment/admissions computer hardware and software.
  • Oversee the analysis of the qualifications of prospective law students, evaluate all applicant files, and make admissions decisions utilizing established law admissions standards, guidelines, and criteria provided by the Dean and the Admissions Committee.
  • Strategically award scholarship funds to admitted applicants to yield desired budget and discount rate.
  • Establish and maintain the LLM programs’ online applications, and process all LLM applications for 6 LLM programs. Work with LLM Program Directors to improve use of technology in processing and recruiting.
  • Act as the admissions resource person for the School of Law’s faculty, senior leadership, administration, and appropriate committees, as well as admissions professionals from other University departments. Act as campus/community spokesperson and contact regarding the School of Law’s admissions policy/activities and statistical data.
  • Represent the School of Law at law forums, graduate programs, and other recruitment events, together with the Director and Associate Director of Student Recruitment.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Communications and Office of Student Recruitment on all marketing and recruiting publications, both print and web based.
  • Interact with the Office of Law Development and Alumni Relations in promoting joint recruitment efforts and alumni relations projects.
  • Manage public relations regarding all admissions functions.
  • Act as the School of Law’s representative in professional law school administrative organizations. Maintain relationships with professional counterparts and attend professional meetings.
  • Supply statistical reports and decision rosters to the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC) and the American Bar Association (ABA).

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree and/or JD degree preferred. Should possess a minimum of 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in admissions and enrollment management, preferably in a law school setting. Experience should reflect upward trend in responsibility and supervisory capacity.
  • Proven knowledge of successful enrollment management strategies and methods. Ability to analyze and interpret data for measurable goals.
  • Senior level management experience and skill in program review, institutional assessment process, and inter-unit coordination.
  • Ability to cultivate relationships with current law students and faculty to improve admission yield ratios and student diversity; establish and maintain effective, collaborative relationships and enlist support of all levels of University community members such as faculty, staff, students, alumni, campus administrators, and community constituencies.
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals or groups representing various social, cultural, economic, and educational levels.
  • Ability to work under the pressures of peak seasons of activity, with frequent interruptions and distractions.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work as a team member and team builder.
  • Demonstrated capacity to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ability to manage a heavy workload and effectively delegate portions of workload to staff.

    KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Significant knowledge of industry trends and best practices.
  • Strong computer competency required, including proficiency in Excel. Must be well acquainted and comfortable with web-based platforms.
  • Ability to implement and provide training in the use of existing computer programs, relational databases, social networking programs, and software tailored for law school admissions.
  • Skill in managing, directing and motivating personnel with diverse experiences and strengths in a complex, consensus-based environment to fulfill goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to influence and motivate constituencies, which could span multiple organizational boundaries.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound business decisions using good business judgment and innovative and creative problem solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage financial, organizational, and staff resources.
  • Excellent oral and written skills to prepare and present professional workshops, panels, presentations, handbooks, handouts, and newsletters.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to cultivate professional and business partnerships.
  • Ability to represent the Law School at evening and weekend events and travel to regional and national events throughout the year.
