The Associate Director of Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Professions Advising Programs will report to the Director of Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Professions Advising Programs. Working with the Director, the Associate Director will advise and mentor pre-health students, serve on the Health Professions Evaluation Committee, and assist in the preparation of committee letters. The Associate Director will serve as co-moderator of the Health Professions Organization and assist a student officer board in sponsoring events relevant to students preparing for professional school programs in medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, podiatry, and veterinary medicine.
Essential Duties:
- Advise pre-medical and other pre-health professions students
- Develop and implement student programs focusing on preparation for professional school application and practice
- Serve as a member of the Health Professions Evaluation Committee
- In conjunction with the Director, serve as a liaison to professional schools
- Refer students to relevant campus services as needed
- Work collaboratively with diverse constituents, including student groups, faculty members of the Health Professions Evaluation Committee, admissions officers, other academic advisors, and administrative staff
Qualifications:
- Two (2) years of experience working with students in higher education
- Experience in advising university students
- Experience working with science majors and other students who seek to apply to doctoral-level health professions programs
- Work experience that includes programming and planning as well as teaching, advising, and/or counseling
Additional Skills Required:
- Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required
- Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team
- Excellent written and interpersonal communication
- Flexibility and willingness to adapt to the needs of the position/office as they arise
- Strong presentation skills
- Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential student information
- Strong advising and/or counseling skills
- Attentiveness to detail, strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple requests and handle them in an efficient and timely manner
- Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population, awareness of appropriate campus resources
- Advising students on a variety of issues including transition and adjustment to the University, setting goals, developing an educational and personal plan, selecting and scheduling courses, conducting an ongoing self-assessment of preparation for declared doctoral degree program
- Must be able to respect, support and contribute to the University’s Catholic and Jesuit mission
