This is full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before 11/04/2020, with the possibility of reappointment and/or permanency. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Grainger Laboratory lab manager and technician. Purpose and objectives include:

Zebrafish facility setup and maintenance: Assisting the principal investigator with the setup of a new laboratory, including a zebrafish facility. Management and oversight of the zebrafish facility, including the coordination and management of a team of students for raising artemia and rotifers; feeding zebrafish adults and larvae; and raising larval zebrafish. 24-hour a day availability for emergency zebrafish system response in case of alarms. Maintain zebrafish environmental control and power, and equipment, in coordination with Aquaneering.

Functional screening of transgenic zebrafish, zebrafish husbandry, generation of novel transgenic and mutant zebrafish lines, and maintenance and genotyping of zebrafish stocks.

Routine laboratory maintenance and management tasks: exercises knowledge and judgment to manage purchasing and shipping of appropriate materials by ordering, making direct purchase, or writing specification; seeks sources for hard-to-find and unique materials, solves shipping problems; works within the laboratory budget, manages safety training and compliance; assists faculty and students in planning and execution of new experiments and experimental problem solving; develops schedules for minimizing downtime of equipment; uses knowledge of materials for safe storage and use of chemicals; prepares reports for weekly meetings and for publications; maintains laboratory documentation. Supervising/training undergraduate and graduate students and training fellow colleagues.

In-depth understanding and application of molecular biology assays: DNA and RNA extractions, molecular cloning, PCR, qPCR, Western blotting, immunoprecipitations, APEX2- mediated proximity labeling, luciferase assays, in situ hybridizations, agarose gel electrophoresis, sequencing, immunohistochemistry, biochemical staining, cryo-sectioning zebrafish tissues, flow cytometry, fluorescence activated cell sorting and confocal microscopy. Routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. Planning and executing experiments for grants and publications. Tissue culture including maintenance and recording of stocks; transfections; generation, selection and characterization of transgenic cell lines.

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $6,000 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,107 - $7,430 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to specialty area to which assigned.

OR

Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

OR

Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the specialty area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
