This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before one year from the intitial date of appointment, with the possibility of reappointment and/or permanency. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Under the general direction of the admission directors, the Admission Specialist is responsible for evaluating admission applications of undergraduate applicants with international coursework to determine if admission can be based on self-reported information or if official transcripts and/or TOEFL score are needed to determine eligibility and verify English proficiency. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for the application and admission review process for athletes, foreign exchange, and American Language Institute (ALI). This includes reviewing application data, correspondence, transcripts, test scores, calculating GPA’s, subject/course review, and updating student records in a student information system (SIS).

The Admission Specialist must have a comprehensive knowledge of the established application filing deadlines for all programs offered at San Diego State University, knowledge of CSU and SDSU admission requirements and processes and be aware of how other areas of Enrollment Services interface with the unit. A high level of independent judgment and problem solving skills are required to effectively perform the job duties. The incumbent is under the general direction of the Associate Director of Admissions who establishes priorities, set goals, and monitors workflow.

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $3,271 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,115 - $5,639 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Minimum Qualifications

Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures. Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite.

These qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience.

Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills

  • Professional experience working with international students in a university/college setting.
  • Experience using a student information system.
  • Professional work experience in a university setting in admissions, advising, evaluations or other student service related office.
  • Professional experience reviewing applications for admission.
  • Professional experience evaluating high school and/or college transcripts.
