Research Associate, Center for Retirement Initiatives - Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy

The Research Associate position is designed to support the work of the Center for Retirement Initiatives. The Research Associate is responsible, detailed-oriented with a strong work ethic and desire to learn about driving policy change at the state and federal level through the Center's education and research initiatives. The Research Associate is responsible for assisting with day to day research and administrative responsibilities, including the preparation of literature reviews, basic information gathering, collecting and analyzing data, policy writing and analysis, contributing data and/or writing for materials produced by the Center and other duties assigned, including but not limited to, administrative tasks and conference and program planning. The Research Associate will have opportunities for professional development by attending conferences and meetings and to become a subject matter expert in areas of public policy and business related to savings, financial services, retirement plans, pensions, asset management and investments.

rRporting to the Center's Executive Director, the Research Associate's duties include, but are not limited to:

Research, writing, policy analysis
  • Review and summarize academic literature
  • Collect and summarize information and data
  • Contribute information, data and/or writing to materials produced by the Center

State, federal and international legislative and program implementation tracking
  • Review state executive and legislative sources for legislative activity
  • Review federal executive and legislative sources for legislative activity
  • Review international policies and programs
  • Prepare bill summaries
  • Prepare program summaries

Administrative and operations support
  • Prepare website content updates
  • Maintain state resource center
  • Assist with preparing conference and program materials and provide staff support for Center's events, programs and conferences
  • Attend or participate in external meetings or events
  • Track and assist with grant opportunities
  • Track weekly media, reports and events


The Research Associate is well organized and detail oriented, has strong research and analytical skills, as well as strong writing, interpersonal and communication skills. High degree of professionalism is required. Must also have strong technology and digital skills.

The ideal candidate would possess the following skills and experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in economics, business, public policy or public administration
  • Graduate degree candidates (e.g., currently in enrolled in a master's degree in public policy or business or a subject relevant Ph.D. program, such as government, economics, or public administration) are preferred and strongly encouraged to apply
  • Strong interest in business, economics and public policy (as it relates to financial well-being, inclusion, and security, financial services, asset building, retirement security, aging and demographic trends)
  • Demonstrated interest in research (e.g., through an internship or independent research project)
  • Basic understanding of US government at the federal and state levels
  • Prior work experience
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Experience with technology and digital tools (e.g., common computer software packages, social media, graphic design programs, etc.)
