The Division of Educational Outreach at Western Carolina University extends access to education, training, and services to individuals, organizations and communities on-campus, locally, regionally and globally. The Executive Director leads a team of professionals who facilitate and support academic deans and units in developing distance and online programs as well as non-credit programs including camps, conferences, professional development and continuing education programs. The Executive Director works to maintain and grown the University’s reputation as a training and development provider of choice for Western North Carolina. Entrepreneurial development of non-credit programs leading to badges, certificates and stackable credentials is required. Collaboration with community colleges, area non-profits, businesses and governmental entities to create niche programs leading to credentials recognized by employers is necessary. Educational Outreach is a diverse and vibrant unit consisting of Professional Growth and Enrichment (camps, conferences, professional development & continuing education programs), Distance and Online Programs, Contract Programs, Military Student Services, Testing, and International Programs. It also serves as a key liaison to the North Carolina Community College System.

•Inspires an expansive vision for world-class educational outreach for a regional comprehensive university.
•Experience in strategic planning, demonstrated ability to lead a self-sustaining organization in higher education, including working with academic disciplines, corporate entities, nonprofits and government entities.
•Demonstrated history of developing new programs, innovative business and partnership models and possess the ability to generate enthusiasm for achieving these goals, and a strong record of institutional leadership, collaboration, and the ability to deliver innovative solutions to the University.
•Possess demonstrated skills in fiscal analysis, planning and administration of multiple budget streams, thorough knowledge of the management and operation of academic and professional programs.
•Possess comprehensive knowledge of the processes involved in developing and implementing non-credit or hybrid programs (i.e., pedagogy, instructor selection, instructional design).
•Strengthen affiliations with international programs, support faculty and student study abroad and grow our intensive English program locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
•Demonstrated success in contract credit programs including international degree programs or course delivery. Ability to manage in cooperation with the appropriate college, accreditation processes and procedures.
•Effective communicator and a consensus builder, with the capacity to promote collegiality among faculty, staff, students, and the community.
•Ability to work closely with faculty, staff, the Executive Director of Community Engagement and the Associate Director of Employee Engagement respond to employer or community needs for training and organizational development.
•Ability to assess training needs of organizations and provide training and consulting services to meet those needs.
•Provide leadership in innovative programs and practices while staying within state and university guidelines.
•Develop organizational models and support structures that enhance Educational Outreach’s role in the region and on campus.

Minimum Qualifications

•Master’s degree in education, business or related field
•2-5 years of experience in non-credit programming, training or organizational development
•Demonstrated ability to create new programs
•At least one year experience managing multiple budgets.
•Experience leading teams and supervising staff.

Preferred Qualifications

•Earned doctorate
•Two years of experience in non-credit programming at a community college or university level
•Demonstrated success in new course development and implementation.
•Experience with badging and stackable credentials.
•Experience with international programming and Intensive English programs in academic or business settings.
•Experience developing and sustaining professional development programs that are responsive to regional needs.
