University of Pennsylvania Libraries seeks an energetic and organized individual to support the research, teaching and learning mission of the Libraries by participating in the workflow related to managing the life cycle of the Libraries’ electronic resources, including acquisition, licensing, discovery, access, maintenance, and evaluation.

Working within the Acquisitions, Access and Licensing department (AAL) and reporting to its Director, the focus of the eResources Access Librarian will be to support and improve access to and discovery of library entitlements across multiple platforms. Librarian will collaborate with staff in AAL, Library Technology Services, vendors and other groups to ensure the accessibility and usability of our content through development and maintenance of key systems such as Alma, the Alma KB, EZProxy and the Summon article discovery service used to create and maintain metadata for and provide access to the Universities’ electronic entitlements. Position will support and implement improvements to existing tools and workflows, and work to provide access to e-resources via new and existing identity management controls. Position will participate in departmental troubleshooting and work to resolve the most complex access problems, respond to reported issues, and work with internal and external partners to fix issues in a timely manner. Librarian will also participate in eresource lifecycle of licensing, purchases, renewals and cancelations.

DUTIES: (Description should be brief and only include principle duties.)

Primary responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Updating and maintaining metadata in Alma, EZ-Proxy and other ER-related applications feeding the discovery layer, openURL resolver, and remote access and authentication products.
  • Investigating and working collaboratively to resolve access issues, communicating status to appropriate user communities, and analyzing recurring issues to proactively prevent future occurrence.
  • Proactively supporting the development and maintenance of standard and emerging access paths and workflows, ensuring compliance with University and industry-wide standards.
  • Coordinating resource licensing, purchase, renewal or cancellation workflows and decisions with library collection specialists, vendors, publishers, and consortia, and appropriate user communities.
  • Negotiating with vendors to obtain favorable license terms for pricing and access terms. Monitoring license agreement processing with the University’s Purchasing Department.
  • Support Libraries’ initiatives in areas of privacy, access or related.
  • Supporting collection and compilation of resource usage and cost analytics statistics.

QUALIFICATIONS: (Qualifications should clearly indicate those that are required and those that are preferred.)

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
  • One to three years relevant professional library experience.
  • Experience providing access to or discovery of electronic resources within the context of an academic or research library.
  • Demonstrated ability to cooperate in a team environment and maintain effective and respectful working relationships.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace. Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a highly collaborative setting, communicate objectives, document and solve problems in a timely manner, and prioritize multiple projects appropriately.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with various modules of an integrated library system as they relate to e-resources management and acquisitions, experience with Alma highly desired.
  • Experience with tools and issues relevant to electronic resources management and discovery.
  • Experience acquiring, managing and troubleshooting electronic resources.
  • Knowledge and understanding of industry-wide issues and practices related to e-resource access, discovery, licensing, acquisitions, use, and management.
