SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: The mission of the Law School Career Services Office is to help students and graduates make informed decisions about career paths and develop individual strategies to obtain career goals. Under the direction of the Director of Legal Career Services, the Assistant Director will assist law school students and graduates in all aspects of the legal career planning and job search process by providing guidance, information and placement assistance. The Assistant Director will also work with the Director on career-related programming as well as on employer relations efforts focused on job development for current law school students and graduates.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Counsel law school students and graduates about their career paths and goals, including helping them conduct self-assessments to aid in their legal job search, advising them about strategies for attaining their professional goals, informing them about resources and programming related to the legal job search process, and connecting individual law school students and graduates with opportunities related to their specific professional goals.
  • Review and edit law school students’ and graduates’ resumes, cover letters, and other application materials to best highlight their relevant professional skills.
  • Conduct interview preparation for law school students and graduates to hone their interviewing skills.
  • Work with law school students and graduates to develop and enhance their professional networking skills.
  • Develop and update existing Career Services Office handouts on topics related to various aspects of the legal job search process.
  • Plan and present career-related programming for law school students including collaborating with law school faculty and student groups, partnering with bar and other professional legal organizations, and working with law school career services consortiums.
  • Assist the Director in the planning and execution of, and driving student participation in, the Pro Bono Program Volunteer Fair, on-campus interviewing programs, and other recruitment programs for the law school students.
  • Assist the Director in counseling law students interested in judicial clerkship and fellowship programs.
  • Assist with the collection of internship data each semester for all current law students as well as annual post-graduate employment data for each graduating class.
  • Assist in the preparation of accreditation reports related to career services functions and activities.
  • Assist in the creation of employment pathways and opportunities regionally and nationwide with law firms and other private and public sector employers and develop and foster relationships with prospective employers to enhance employment opportunities for the law school students and graduates.
  • Consult and coordinate efforts with University colleagues in various offices such as, but not limited to, Admissions, Alumni Relations, Financial Aid, Graduate Academic Resource Center, Law Enrollment Center, and Clinical and Experiential Learning.
  • Serve as backup to Assistant Dean of Students for student organizations, law school events, student counseling and referral to campus resources, as needed.
  • Monitor current trends and developments within the legal job market.
  • Participate in professional organizations, attend professional conferences, workshops, seminars and/or conventions to expand and keep current the career programs and opportunities for students.
  • Assist the Director with other related duties and special projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Juris Doctor

EXPERIENCE: Previous (minimum of one to three years’) experience practicing law as an attorney, and previous (minimum of one to three years’) experience in one or more of the following areas; law school career services, professional career counseling involving careers in law, legal recruiting, advising, teaching, supervising, and/or mentoring law students or new attorneys, equivalent related experience with careers, the job market and/or career counseling.

OTHER: Evening and weekend hours required. Some travel. Computer literate and familiarity with career-related technology and software.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with self-assessment tools.
  • Proficiency using social media avenues and social networking tools.
  • Experience as an attorney in both private practice and public interest.
  • Public interest experience especially with fellowships and/or judicial clerkships.
  • Knowledge of career options, hiring needs, recruiting practices, job market, employment trends, and professional development issues within the legal profession.
  • Involvement in professional legal organizations.
