The Department of Animal Science is the largest academic program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and provides instruction to over 850 undergraduate students and 90 graduate students. The Department is also a leader in extension and engagement programs to farmers, allied industry and the public, and conducts internationally recognized research into the nutrition, genetics, reproduction, health and management of domesticated animals. North Carolina is one of the largest and most progressive areas of food animal agriculture in the world and offers excellent opportunities for collaborations with industry scientists and producers.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Animal Science at North Carolina State University is pleased to announce recruitment for a tenure-track faculty position in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the rank of Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist with formal appointments in Extension (80%) and Teaching (20%). This faculty position will be responsible for developing comprehensive, nationally recognized and extramural funded systems-level Extension programs and applied research by evaluating the wider socioeconomic impacts of food animal production and management and its integration into the total food and farming system. Food animal Extension programs are part of a larger integrated and interdisciplinary farming system. As we address important issues of farmers on a local, national, and international level, it is imperative that we integrate information collected at multiple scales along the farming and food system supply-chain to inform decision-making and research. Leveraging modern technologies to collect and integrate new and relevant data to address critical issues of the industry is a top priority for this position. The incumbent will have a strong background in animal agriculture and will actively engage with stakeholders and commodity organizations to provide practical knowledge that will facilitate precision livestock management and inform decision-making to improve environmental sustainability, animal health and welfare, productivity, food security and rural communities. This position will interconnect professionals from many disciplines to improve overall production systems. In addition, training of students as future leaders and scientists in data sciences and animal systems is an important objective of this position and the successful candidate is expected to develop a senior and graduate level course in this topic area.

Inclusiveness and diversity are academic imperatives and university goals. The successful candidate will be expected to foster an environment that is welcoming of all groups.
