Duties

JOB SUMMARY:
The Restricted Programs/Grant Accountant is responsible for advanced accounting and the maintenance of fiscal records pertaining to all restricted programs and grants of the University. Work involves maintaining complex control accounts, preparing complex reports, and performing independent auditing of fiscal transactions and records. The accountant will also develop and maintain a benchmarking program to compare the University to peer institutions for strategic analysis by Financial Affairs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
•Review and approve all restricted expenditure reimbursements.
•Approve all restricted program requisitions, check for funds availability and proper budget category.
•Prepare budget journal entries and adjustments.
•Check expense accounts, keep appropriate fiscal records.
•Responsible for all aspects of accounting for Restricted Programs.
•Request funds from appropriate grants or agencies.
•Prepare all reports as required by grants.
•Calculate and authorize payments for Indirect Cost.
•Prepare year-end closing and opening entries for all Restricted Funds.
•Prepare Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards annually.
•Maintain Grant files.
•Update grant information on college website for financial disclosure.
•Serve as backup check preparer in critical periods of time.
•Assist with preparation of financial statement section related to restricted funds.
•Develop, promote, and follow sound fiscal practices, procedures and internal controls in the administration of the University’s restricted programs and grants. Monitor and evaluate those programs on an ongoing basis to ensure their effectiveness.
•Develop and maintain a benchmarking program to compare the University to peer institutions for strategic analysis by Financial Affairs
•Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changing work scope and tasks based on need.
•Actively work towards building cooperative and collaborative relationships with peers and internal faculty and staff.
•Maintain “open door” to internal and external customers.
•Identify opportunities for improvements to work practices and offer viable solutions for implementation.
•Proactively engage in problem solving related to tasks in this position with internal and external people.
•Routinely practice self-monitoring by assessing self to make improvements or take corrective action to improve performance.
•Complete other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
•Bachelor’s or higher degree with a minimum of five years of experience in an accounting position, required.
•CPA or Masters preferred.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS AND JOB REQUIREMENTS:
•Experience working with advanced database, spreadsheet and other current computer software applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Banner, etc.)
•Working knowledge of computerized accounting software
•Effective oral, written, and interpersonal skills
•Demonstrated organizational and planning skills
•Demonstrated knowledge of accounting principles and practices
•Ability to work independently and as an effective team member
•Ability to make decisions in accordance with institutional policy
•Ability to follow established laws, policies and procedures

Located in historic Athens, Alabama, Athens State University offers junior and senior-level coursework to community college graduates and transfer students holding sufficient credits from other institutions. Presently, over 3,100 students have selected Athens State because of its neighborly environment where 50 majors and degree programs are offered, with courses taught by a supportive and exceptional faculty. Approximately 80% of the students are enrolled in at least one online course. The typical student is a working adult who commutes. Recently, the University was featured in the 2015 Best Value Online College Rankings by OnlineU.org for four online programs including computer science, accounting, education and human resources. The University offers undergraduate degree programs in Liberal Arts, Teacher Preparation, and Business.
