POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Position Summary

The Repair Machinist, VIII supports research activities by providing machine shop services to the scientific community.

List of Responsibilities

  • Repair mechanical systems to maintain an acceptable environment for the research community;
  • Lay out by means of surface plate, vernier height gauge, dial indicator, gauge blocks, sine bar, angle plates and buttons;
  • Work on ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, wood and synthetic materials;
  • Perform bench set ups and use of hand tools;
  • Troubleshoot, disassemble, repair and assemble equipment such as hydraulic, pneumatic, and internal combustion engines;
  • Design and build simple tools, jigs, gauges, fixtures, dies and mechanisms necessary to complete the job;
  • Solder, braze and weld (gas and electric);
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on facility machinery;
  • Fabricate replacement and new parts for facility machinery;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Education Background

  • High School Diploma and 5+ years of current experience is required.

Skills and Competencies

  • Must possess the strength and dexterity needed to perform the job and the physical ability to move equipment as necessary;
  • Must adhere to operational safety rules and regulations as deemed by the College;
  • Must be able to follow directives and possess good communication skills and ability to interact with building/office occupants effectively;
  • Must be able to work from blue prints, sketches, or models with a high degree of proficiency;
  • Must have own measuring and general tools;
  • Must possess expert knowledge of the following machine tools: band saw, radial drill, horizontal mill, bridgeport mill, bench lathe, surface grinder, Van Normal mill, engine lathe, universal tool grinder, lapping machine, honing machine, filling machine, and microdrill;
  • Must be familiar with charts, tables, and specifications that are in constant use.
