The Mathematics Department is housed in the College’s School of Arts and Sciences. There are approximately 150 mathematics majors, about two-thirds of whom are intending to be secondary mathematics teachers. The department has 11 full-time faculty members who engage their students in learning, teaching, and scholarship.

The Mathematics Department promotes equity, inclusion, diversity, and social justice. Teacher candidates are placed in rural, urban, and suburban high-needs school districts as part of their education.

Major Responsibilities

•Teach and assess learning for courses in statistics and mathematics for mathematics majors and for non-majors.
•Engage in research and other scholarly activities.
•Provide service to the department and college.
•Hold regular office hours and interact with undergraduate students including, academic advisement and mentoring to students with declared majors in the department.

Candidates should possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Strong oral and written communication skills; Commitment to equity, inclusion, and social justice; Excellent interpersonal skills including collegiality in interactions within and outside of the campus community; Passion for teaching and mentoring undergraduate students from all skill ability levels, academic backgrounds, social and cultural identities with diverse lived experiences;

Functional and Supervisory Relationships

Reports to the academic department chair.

Required Qualifications

•PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, or closely related field (ABD may be considered with expected complete date by September 2020).
•Evidence of teaching effectiveness

Preferred Qualifications

•At least 18 hours of graduate coursework in statistics and/or probability
•Experience with educational technology
•Experience with directing undergraduate research projects
•Experience obtaining external grants or funding
•Ability to collaborate with colleagues from other departments
•Ability to support an equitable and diverse scholarly environment
•Commitment to undergraduate education and to improving access to higher education for all students
