Position Summary:

The UC Irvine Medical Center Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for visionary and strategic leadership of Orange County's only academic medical center. The CEO will be accountable for operational oversight for the inpatient and ambulatory settings, and for ensuring that care is delivered effectively and efficiently, with a focus on growing ambulatory services. The CEO will work closely with the chancellor and the vice chancellor of health affairs to ensure a strategic alignment between the clinical enterprise and the academic and research mission of the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences. S/he will provide vision and strategic planning in the ever- changing healthcare environment; drive operational excellence in the delivery of high quality, patient-centered care; build key alliances and partnerships in the community and across the UC Health system, and embrace the aspirations of UC Irvine Medical Center to be a pre-eminent academic medical center. The ideal candidate will be equally at ease with internal customers as well as with external constituencies, including philanthropic organizations.

The CEO is expected to be an accomplished, seasoned healthcare executive who values academic medicine. The CEO will need to excel in providing values-based, innovative and inspirational leadership to one of the nation's leading academic health systems. The new CEO must be an exceptional leader who can command respect and enthusiasm from the sophisticated stakeholders within UC Irvine. In assuming responsibility for the physical, fiscal and human resources of UC Irvine Health, the CEO will need to collaborate with executive leadership to ensure continued achievement of superlative results. The CEO must embrace the changing healthcare landscape and create strategic partnerships that are bold, responsive, and realistic.

Required Qualifications:

Fifteen or more years of progressive executive level health care administrative experience at the national level preferably within an academic medical center or a large and complex teaching hospital resulting in a broad based knowledge of hospital operations in a complex environment.

Advanced degree in a management discipline; a Doctor of Medicine degree is strongly preferred, but not required.

Professional level of knowledge regarding academic medicine acquired through extensive experience

A thorough and broad knowledge of healthcare issues and an understanding of, and proven ability to manage in a complex and competitive environment;

Significant presence and healthcare leadership recognized at the national level;

Significant presence and healthcare leadership recognized at the national level;

Proof of visionary and strategic influence resulting in positive outcomes on multiple and measurable dimensions;

Demonstrated and recurring management successes delivering significant and intricate organizational outcomes;

Evidence of successful healthcare business development and expansion, mindful of future healthcare trends, opportunities, and challenges;

Personal and professional commitment to the community in which the healthcare organization operates;

Ability to communicate the UCI Health mission to the public and to constituents in a clear, concise and persuasive manner;

Personal characteristics should include honesty, integrity, commitment to excellence, intellectual agility, self-confidence, decisiveness, dedication, professional and mature comportment, openness and approachability, motivating and inspiring leadership, team builder, collaborative, empathetic, enthusiastic, and a good listener.

Knowledge of complex organizations and how to creatively balance competing needs and strategies in achievement of optimal outcome for UCIMC overall;

Demonstrated influence management and listening skills;

A deep understanding of and appreciation for, academic medicine and the value it brings to the community as well as the challenges;

Ability to conceive, test, communicate and implement an effective vision, strategy, objectives and goals for UCIMC over a multi-year timeframe;

Skill in listening, learning, assembling necessary information to stakeholders in consideration of complex issues and in reaching optimal decisions and outcomes;

Capacity to build and to augment over time, highly effective relationships with all UCIMC internal and external stakeholders so as to advance the vision and goals for UCIMC;

Superior and politically astute communication capabilities in regard to content, credibility of message, tone, style, method, and audience;

Proficient in exercise of personal influence, building consensus, providing leadership, and in legitimate earning and maintenance of stakeholder trust and respect;

Effective judgment and ability to alter decision making styles to fit all situations, facts and circumstances to achieve an optimal outcome;

Experience in working as a team member across organizational boundaries and with external stakeholders;

Dexterity in initiating and effectively creating change and organizational improvement;

Personal commitment to the organization, its mission, and community;

Ability to contribute to, and influence matters affecting the delivery of healthcare, teaching and research at national and international levels;
