The Non-Enrolled Fellow (No Benefits), SOM participates in the daily activities of the laboratory with the purpose of facilitating the development of a high-level research program. The purpose of this HRSA funded project is to provide or develop educational resources for health care providers in the U.S. Virgin Islands. These resources will be based on the current and future changing knowledge of the Zika virus, its impact on child development, and responses to diagnosed special needs of Zika infected or Zika exposed infants and toddlers. The current mutation of the Zika virus has resulted in viral behavior that is quite distinct from previously established, known viruses. As such, ongoing monitoring of the professional literature will be necessary to develop in.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Prepares experiment proposals with detailed rationale, background data, and proposed methods and organization.
  • Conducts laboratory experiments and studies and records findings.
  • Maintains data files and conducts data analysis.
  • Drafts and publishes manuscripts and articles for peer-reviewed journals.
  • Prepares and submits grant applications.
  • Designs, executes, interprets, and integrates scientific data.
  • Maintains current knowledge of significant developments in the field.
  • Become knowledgeable about Zika, its physiological impact, and associated medical conditions.

  • Weekly monitor the professional literature for freshly published articles on Zika (both human and animal studies).
  • Accompany Pl for at least one trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands to observe and assist in a community health care provider training activity.

    Prepare an abstract on current knowledge of Zika for presentation at a national conference.

  • Assist Pl in the gathering of data and organization of the final report which will be due in June 2020.
  • Participate in the evaluation of program activities relative to grant submission and specific aims. Detail ongoing program needs to sustain the grant funded efforts in the U.S Virgin Islands. Other duties as assigned.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
