All tenure-track candidates are expected to have a demonstrated interest in liberal arts and sciences education, contribute effectively to undergraduate teaching, assist in curriculum development, provide service to the department and College, as well as be active in scholarly, creative, and/or research productivity appropriate to a liberal arts environment.

Position Summary

The Department of Art & Visual Culture at Spelman College invites applications for an Innovation Lab Co-Director to begin January 2020. As Co-Director, this position reports to the Chair of the Division of the Arts. As faculty, this position reports to the Chair of the Department of Art & Visual Culture.

The Innovation Lab (IL) at Spelman College is a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) makerspace for the entire Spelman community to create, experiment, play, and iterate through rapid ideation and prototyping. The lab aims to increase the infusion of leading edge technologies into the liberal arts curriculum in order to enable every student who attends Spelman to achieve a level of mastery in the use of use of 21st century technologies. The current position is an upper-level management position in this dynamic, academic unit of the College that serves students, faculty and staff. The position reports to the Division of the Arts chair and works closely with the Lab’s other Co-Director and Program Manager. The IL also works with internal and external partners to facilitate access to the resources of the IL and to coordinate, organize, and execute workshops, lectures, hack-a-thons and other student engagement programs. As the Co-Director, the successful candidate will be the primary strategist and budget officer for the Innovation Lab, alongside the other Co-Director.

The IL plans to augment and amplify its expertise and resources by establishing key academic and industry partnerships. One of the roles of the co-Director is to work with these partners to develop enriching educational experiences. Examples might include courses, hack-a-thons, internships and field experiences for students, faculty and student research opportunities, faculty development opportunities and opportunities for experts to teach at Spelman.

The IL will also work with the college’s developing interest in entrepreneurship.

The Co-Director will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the innovation curriculum. The Co-Director will identify faculty necessary to teach, keep learning outcomes up to date and identify equipment and resources necessary to delivery of the curriculum.

This tenure-track, Associate Professor appointment requires a 2/2 teaching load, as long as this position is also fulfilling the Innovation Lab Co-Director duties. Otherwise, this faculty position has a 3/3 teaching load. Responsibilities include teaching and mentoring undergraduate students primarily in the new academic major, interactive media, but also other students who are interested in taking Interactive media coursework, maintaining a well-articulated creative research/scholarship, service to the department and the college, and contributions to the overall mission of Spelman College.

[email protected] includes the departments of Art & Visual Culture, Theater & Performance, Dance Performance & Choreography, Music, the Digital Moving Image Salon, the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art and the Spelman College Innovation Lab. The College is planning a new innovation and arts building, which will be an interdisciplinary environment that supports and advances experimentation, collaboration, active play, research and the imaginative use of digital technologies.

Essential duties and responsibilities for Co-Directors:

●Lead the mission, vision, and strategy for the Innovation Lab.
●Serve as the primary budget officers for the Innovation Lab.
●Advise the College of the needs of the physical learning environment
●Manage and oversee the Innovation Lab Manager.
●Promote the Innovation Lab by networking with the key players in Atlanta’s Innovation and Tech scene, as well as by speaking at conferences, summits, symposia, etc.
●Identify key strategic partners
●Solicit and maintain relationships with potential industry and educational partners.
●Provide content, supervise, conduct and/or assist with conducting workshops, hack-a-thons, lectures and other events hosted by the lab (organized by the lab’s Program Manager). This includes, but is not limited to hosting the sessions and/or providing technical support for the sessions.
●Alongside the Lab Manager, the Co-Directors will collect lab usage data for end-of-year reporting. The collected data may include, but is not limited to, lab usage, project type, patron classification, majors, curriculum integration metrics and other.
●Develop, lead, manage and oversee a new academic major in Interactive Media
●Develop and teach courses in the new academic major and minor.
●Hire, supervise, and assign future faculty to new interactive media courses.
●Advise students enrolled in the new academic major and minor.

Required QualificationsPreferred Qualifications

Familiarity with laser cutting, 3D printing, AR/VR, physical computing and basic computer programming are particularly desirable.
