Open Rank, Tenured/Tenure-Track, Computer Science

Location:
New Orleans, LA
Open Date:
Oct 11, 2019
Description:

The Tulane Computer Science Department anticipates multiple open-rank positions starting in Fall 2020. Applications are encouraged from leading researchers who are interested in joining a unique program that focuses equally on core computer science and on its applications to the myriad of areas where computer science is having a fundamental effect on how research is conducted. These openings are aimed at candidates with research interests in data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence, and in networks, visualization, and databases. We also welcome applications from colleagues working in systems, cloud computing and related areas.

The Tulane Computer Science department currently has seven tenured / tenure-track faculty and two Professors of Practice. We anticipate attaining a critical mass of ten tenure-stream faculty within the next year, and a stable state of fifteen faculty within the following two - three years.

Tenured/Tenure-Track Open-Rank Positions: The Tulane Computer Science Department invites applications for multiple tenure-track/tenured open rank positions to begin in Fall 2020. We are especially interested in applicants who work in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Data Science. We have two faculty working in this area, and are interested in building a group in the area that will focus on applications of these areas to collaborative research with colleagues in other departments throughout the university.

We also invite applications from colleagues who work in Distributed Systems, Networks and Cloud Computing, with applications to cyber security, and in Visualization and Large Data and its relation to HCI. Our faculty are actively engaged in research in these and related areas and in their application to research in related disciplines across the university.

The computer science department has placed a special emphasis on applying computer science and its underlying principles to related disciplines in the sciences, engineering, the health sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities. This emphasis is reflected across our curriculum, from the undergraduate coordinate major which requires a capstone project that illustrates the application of computer science and its underlying principles to related areas, to the PhD program that requires all students to complete an interdisciplinary project in their second year, and to the research of the faculty and postdocs that emphasizes applying new research results to related areas. All faculty are expected to establish research collaborations with colleagues in related areas in the School of Science and Engineering, in the School of Liberal Arts, and in the Health Sciences on the Tulane downtown campus.

Successful candidates for these positions will have outstanding research records that emphasize the application of computer science and its principles to research in related areas, excellent teaching records, and have strong records of attracting research funding on a continued basis. Junior faculty who have postdoctoral experience establishing their research program and who ideally have teaching experience also are encouraged to apply. Review of applications will begin January 1, 2020, and continue until the positions are filled.

Applicants for these positions whose research is relevant to AI and the applications to Robotics or to NLP could also be considered for a joint appointment with the Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition.

Qualifications:

PhD in Computer Science

Application Instructions:

Complete applications for the Tenured/Tenure-Track Open Rank position should include a current CV, statements on research and teaching, and at least three letters of recommendation. Applications for these positions will be reviewed starting January 1, 2020; the review and interview process will continue until the positions are filled. These positions are subject to final administrative approval.
