DESCRIPTION

Under close supervision, the incumbent will assist the Principal Investigator (PI) and postdoctoral fellows to conduct experiments that require specialized laboratory procedures in molecular and cell biology. Procedures include tissue culture, Western blotting, implementation and maintenance of neuronal primary cultures, in situ hybridization, immunostaining, and PCR genotyping of transgenic mouse line. The incumbent will be maintain detailed and accurate records, and communicate regularly with the PI regarding experiments.In addition incumbent will assist with laboratory maintenance such as buffer, media and reagent preparation, and disposal of biohazard waste.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or a GED and one (1) year of laboratory experience or two (2) years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Possess the knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. Bachelor's Degree preferred.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with basic and general techniques in molecular biology.

  • Demonstrated experience in general laboratory techniques. Ability to measure, weigh, and mix chemicals.

  • Strong experience in standard and repetitive molecular biology techniques, including tissue culture and Western blotting.

  • Proven ability to prepare solutions at proper concentrations, operate analytical balances and perform accurate calculations.

  • Proven knowledge of library usage to locate journals in stacks and from other sources, and ability to copy specific articles for research.

  • Proficient operation of a personal computer and software application, such as Access, MS Word and Excel. Knowledge to work with and learn new software.

  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and to work closely and collaboratively with others including the ability to follow written and oral instructions.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to order and maintain lab equipment and supplies.

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items such as gloves and goggles. Familiarity with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with implementation and maintenance of neuronal primary cultures and in situ hybridization.
