The Department of Philosophy at the University of Connecticut invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2020. The normal teaching load is four courses per year. The Area of Specialization for this position is Ancient Greek Philosophy. The Area of Competence is open for this position. Typical duties include research, teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and service. The University of Connecticut is a top-25 public research university in the U.S. The Department of Philosophy is an extremely active research department with a strong graduate program.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research and scholarship through high quality publications in top-tier venues and through mentoring of graduate students. In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Successful candidates will highlight a commitment to equity and be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate inclusive experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and/or provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles, populations, and intellectual interests.


Ph.D. in Philosophy (or equivalent foreign degree) by time of appointment; demonstrated potential in establishing a successful program of research and scholarship; significant evidence of productivity in a research program in Ancient Greek Philosophy; ability to conduct research in primary sources written in Ancient Greek; demonstrated qualification to teach and participate in our strong philosophy Ph.D. program; ability to contribute through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience.


We would like but do not require that the candidate demonstrates one or more of the following qualifications: ability to conduct research in Latin or Arabic from classical or medieval sources; ability to draw upon secondary sources in a language other than English; ability to teach courses on other subjects in the history of philosophy; additional research expertise that complements that of current faculty (


This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2020. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
