Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision, perform research work medical and related technical areas involving the use of lab and/or research skills. Work includes maintaining animal colonies, laboratory supplies, training new staff and directing the work of students. The research focuses on understanding the physiology and molecular biology of hearing loss. Mainly we use microscopy, genetics, and molecular biology instruments and techniques. This position involves working with animals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Perform cell culture work to determine protein-protein interaction using the Bifunctional Fluorescence Complementation (BiFC) assay. Prepare culture media, passage cells, transfect cells and capture images under the fluorescence microscope (15%)
  2. Isolate DNA and RNA from mouse tissue. Analyze DNA sequence. Conduct gene expression analysis. (15%)
  3. Maintain the rodent colony including breading mice, weaning, collecting tissue samples for genotyping, splitting, monitoring, and genotyping. (35%)
  4. Following detailed specifications, set up the equipment and supplies for experiments (primarily DNA-related work, western blotting, immunohystochemistry). (25%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Record results for a particular experiment or closely related series of experiments. Maintain records of experiments, including protocols used and use of animals. (5%)
  2. Perform other laboratory-related duties as assigned. (5%)

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with supervisor and lab personnel to discuss progress made in the assigned work and any other matters.

University: Occasional contact with departmental personnel to coordinate the use of common equipment and facilities.

External: Limited contact with vendors to exchange information to resolve question on laboratory supplies.

Students: Contact with student employees for training purposes.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

No supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in a science-related field such as Biology and biochemistry and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associate’s degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  1. Basic knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the fields of biology.
  2. Good oral and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
  3. Must have good organizational skills. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy.
  4. Must follow instructions, guidelines, and protocols to perform lab duties and experiments.
  5. Must have good computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel.
  6. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  7. Must handle animals with care and respect at all times and demonstrate compassion for animals and dedication to Animal Resource Center mission.
  8. Must demonstrate compliance with Animal Resource Center (ARC) policies and procedures and compliance to regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines and other applicable regulatory guidelines for animal research.
  9. Previous experience working with animals is preferred.
  10. Previous experience in cell culture studies is preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS

General laboratory environment. May have exposure to hazards, including glutaraldehyde, paraformaldehyde, general chemicals, and animals. Occasional work is required in off hours for emergency, urgent, or time sensitive lab tasks.

Case's animal facilities are accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) and is managed according to the "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals” appropriate Federal Animal Welfare Regulations, and the Public Health Service “Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals." This position, and all animal research personnel, are subject to internal compliance to ARC SOP’s and to compliance regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines, the State of Ohio Veterinary Practice Act, Federal Drug Enforcement Administration regulatory guidelines, US Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine regulations and other applicable regulatory guidelines.
