This position is Part Time 20 Hours per week

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under general supervision, the Research Assistant 2 will plan and carry out screening, enrollment, and date collection activities for a research project that involves parents caring for technology-dependent children in their home. Data collection will occur in a private place of the parent’s choosing (i.e., home, public library). In collaboration with the research team, the research assistant will monitor and revise data collection tools and procedures as warranted. The research assistant will communicate with clinical staff at the recruitment sites and assure human subjects’ compliance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Plan and carry out research protocols in accordance with general plans as outlined by the principal investigator and project manager. Screen parents of technology-dependent children for study eligibility and present study to potential participants. Perform research activities related to informed consent, data collection, hair sample collection, and instruction of parents regarding use of the Actiwatch and sleep log. Collect data from clinical records. Communicate with clinical staff at the data collection sites. Assist the research team with issues in recruitment, retention, data collection, and other substantive issues. Ensure human subjects’ compliance. (65%)
  2. Provide weekly progress reports to the principal investigator. Participate in team meetings with the study group and contribute constructively to project discussions. (10%)
  3. Ensure accurate data entry and follow quality control protocols to check data. Assist with data management including actigraphy data; Actiwatch maintenance. Analyze and provide data necessary for internal and grant reporting; support quantitative data analysis (10%)
  4. May assist in developing improved methods, procedures or protocols to enhance recruitment, retention, and electronic data collection methods. (5%)
  5. Assist principal investigator with maintaining study records. (5%)
  6. Train new staff and direct work of students. Oversee inventory. Order supplies under the direction of the project manager and principal investigator. (5%)

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Must maintain required certifications for protection of human subjects (CREC hours) and Good Clinical Practice credentialing. (<1%)
  2. Maintain UH credentials and complete yearly COI statement. (<1%)
  3. Perform other duties as assigned. (<1%)

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with the principal investigator, co-investigators, project manager and other research team members. Contact with the other School of Nursing research staff and faculty conducting related studies.

University: Contact with investigators conducting similar research within the university at education and research meetings.

External: Contact with medical, nursing and medical records staff at University Hospitals Case Medical Center (main campus and satellites), Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital and other recruitment hospitals as needed.

Students: Regular contact with BSN, MSN, DNP, PhD and other students who may assist with the project.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. Train new staff; direct the work of students.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field, social work, psychology, or sociology and 1 to 3 years of related experience or Associate’s degree in an approved biotechnology and 2 to 4 years of experience required. Experience and skill in interviewing patients and family members required. Experience working with families of children with complex, chronic conditions, prior participation in clinical research, and experience obtaining informed consent is desirable. Valid driver’s license required. Must maintain required certification in protection of human subjects (CREC hours).

  3. Experience and skill interviewing individuals and excellent command of English language.
  4. Strong data management skills.

  6. Ability to work under limited supervision.
  7. Proficient in use of Microsoft Office products, SPSS, email and internet searches.
  8. Ability to administer data collection instruments via iPad.
  9. Ability to maintain confidentiality and sensitivity in all aspects of working with human subjects.
  10. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  11. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and study participants and their children face to face.
  12. Ability to follow pre-established protocol and study guidelines to perform job functions.

WORKING CONDITIONS

No exposure to hazardous materials. Must have reliable form of transportation for travel to data collection appointments. Valid U. S. driver’s license required. The position requires movement between data collection sites and study office throughout the day.
