Position Summary:

The College of Agriculture, Arkansas State University-Jonesboro, invites applications for a 9-month appointment as a tenure-track assistant professor with an anticipated start date of August 2020. We are seeking an outstanding individual with expertise in the broad area of crop science

The nine-month appointment is in support of academic programs, scholarly activities, and service. The successful applicant will have a strong commitment to: teaching at all university levels; development of an impactful applied research program; and university/community service

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The appointment is a teaching (75%) position (9 credit hours per semester) with an applied research (25%) component
  • Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of crop production, weed control, plant disease management, sustainable food systems, and agriculture-natural resources interactions
  • The successful candidate will develop an applied research program in their area of expertise, secure extramural funding, mentor thesis-level graduate students, and publish results in high quality scientific journals
  • Service and leadership activities with professional societies is encouraged, while service on departmental, college, and/or university committees is required
  • The faculty member will have undergraduate recruiting and retention responsibilities for students in the Plant and Soil Science major
  • Possibilities exist for summer salary support through research collaborations and extramural funding; the office of Research and Technology Transfer is available to assist with grant applications and other extramural funding opportunities
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Applicants must have expertise in the broad area of crop production, weed and disease management, and plant breeding

Applicants must have demonstrated: strong verbal and written skills in English; interest and desire to interact with the regional agriculture community; and potential for high quality teaching, applied research, and scholarship

Other:

Opportunities exist for collaboration with area agricultural producers as well as faculty in the A-State College of Sciences and Mathematics, the Arkansas Biosciences Institute, the USDA-ARS Delta Water Management Research Unit, and the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture

Minimum Qualifications:

The College of Agriculture seeks an individual with an earned Ph.D. in Agronomy, Crop Science, Weed Science, or a closely related field. Candidates near degree completion of the Ph.D. (ABD) may be considered


Preferred Qualifications:
Strong candidates will have: 1) expertise in regionally relevant, irrigated crop production (rice, soybean, cotton, corn); 2) precision agriculture experience, as it relates to row crop management; 3) experience teaching in both lecture and laboratory settings; 4) experience in collaborative research settings; 5) a track record of grant writing and journal publication success

The Arkansas State University System is governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees appointed by the Governor of Arkansas to serve staggered seven-year terms. The trustees hire the system president, approve the curriculum, annually approve an operating budget, and establish policies for the efficient and effective operation of the institutions.
