The Academic Advisor II position in the Klein College of Media and Communication works under limited guidance while advising a diverse population of students concerning an appropriate academic schedule, choice of major, number of hours that may be taken, probation, and/or dismissal. Contact may be on individual or group basis. This position may provide direction, guidance, and project supervision to less experienced staff, and manage other advising-related special projects. Works with faculty, staff, and students to disseminate information regarding curriculum requirements, academic policy, and other related issues as they arise. Meets regularly with assigned students to discuss academic and professional goals. Prepares and presents student orientation sessions and assists with course selection and registration activities. Leads at least one Klein Freshman and /or Transfer Seminar per year. Assists in the coordination of Fly in 4, recruitment, retention, and at-risk student initiatives. Assists in clearing student records for graduation each semester. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
Master's degree and at least one and a half years of post-degree experience including at least six months advising experience in an academic setting in higher education.
Required Skills and Abilities:
*Demonstrated customer service skills along with the ability to effectively work with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff.
*Excellent oral and written communication skills.
*Strong organizational skills as well as the ability to take initiative and work independently.
*Demonstrated experience in program development and implementation.
*Ability to work evenings and weekends occasionally.
*Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
