The Office of Environmental Health and Safety seeks applicants for the position of Hazardous Materials Technician. This position will support departmental efforts to promote the safe and compliant conduct of research, education and patient care services across the UVA community. The Hazardous Materials Technicians serves as a resource to the University by picking up hazardous and non-hazardous materials from sites across Grounds. They consolidate hazardous and non-hazardous materials, perform emergency response duties, operate solvent distillation units, and answer basic materials-related questions.

Successful candidates will work well in a team, be detail oriented, able to balance multiple projects at a time, be highly reliable, and have the ability to communicate and act professionally with all members of the University community. The Office of Environmental Health and Safety supports professional development and strongly encourages job-related training and educational opportunities.

Responsibilities:

  • Safely collect hazardous and non-hazardous waste, including inspection of waste containers and waste tickets, and correction of any issues found prior to accepting possession of said containers. Transport waste to the Special Materials Handling Facility (SMHF) in a safe and legal fashion, following DOT requirements. While in labs, answer questions about hazardous materials and waste and assist clients with best safety practices. Perform cursory inspections of laboratory and waste pick up areas during the pickup process.
  • Safely collects and transports Regulated Medical Waste from medical center and other collection points to the SMHF. Monitors stock of EHS supplied RMW containers and distributes new stock as needed.
  • Under the guidance from the supervisor, performs the logging in, segregation, labeling, bulking and storage of hazardous waste. Performs data entry of waste data into waste software. Operates solvent distillation units

  • Washes reusable containers and labels them for reuse. Disposes of non-reusable containers.

  • Perform emergency response to spills under supervision of Hazardous Waste Supervisor, or Program Manager.

  • Assists with response to indoor air quality incidents

  • Performs general upkeep on SMHF work areas.

  • Wash reusable materials containers and prepare them for reuse.
  • Distribute Regulated Medical Materials containers.
  • Log in, segregate, label, and sort hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
  • Drive Hazardous Materials trucks and vehicles.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED with at least 1 year of work experience is required. An Associate's degree in Chemistry, Engineering or other science-based major and at least two years of relevant experience is preferred. Experience with hazardous materials is preferred.

Must have completed 40 hours of HAZWOPER training and Bloodborne Pathogen training, or commit to completing within six months of hire.

Required License: Valid, un-restricted Virginia Driver's License, or the ability to obtain an un-restricted Virginia Driver's License within 90 days of hire.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to meet all physical requirements including lifting 50lbs, handling and manipulating materials, and walking and standing for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work in a team environment as a collaborative, professional and respectful team member
  • Ability to complete job duties and responsibilities while wearing personal protection equipment (PPE), including a respirator
  • Ability to work a schedule that may include on-call responsibilities to cover holiday, weekend and after hour response
  • Ability to follow all University and department policies and procedures
  • Ability to work safely with hazardous materials (e.g. chemical, biological, radioactive)
  • Ability to drive all department vehicles including box trucks and large cargo vans in accordance with all state and university policy
  • Strong record-keeping capabilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in-writing
  • Comfortable working in a variety of workspaces including patient care, animal, research laboratory and outdoor environments

Required Computer applications: Ability to use the Microsoft Office Suite and experience with basic Internet browsers

Required Immunization: Employees will be required to comply with the Health System’s new immunization policy – OCH-002: Occupational Health Screening and Maintenance.

Working Environment: Extreme temperature - wearing protective clothing in summer; Atmospheric Contaminants - chemical waste operations; Radiation - lab environment; Exposure or Potential Exposure to Blood/Body Fluids - incidental; Chemical Hazardous - chemical waste operations; Walking-standing concrete - facilities maintenance.
