Warren Wilson College is seeking a professional with the right skill-set and experience to oversee the college’s comprehensive recycling and solid waste program. Ideal candidates will have experience mentoring and supervising students as well as professional experience with recycling, composting, hazardous waste management, and waste stream diversion. POSITION SUMMARY

The Recycling and Solid Waste Supervisor is responsible for the planning, training and supervision of the Recycling student crew, as well as ensuring all recycling and waste program operations are in compliance with the policies of Warren Wilson College and county, state, and federal guidelines. Under the direction of the Senior Supervisor of Preventative Maintenance and the Director of Facilities, the Recycling Supervisor is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the department and creating awareness of the environmental benefits of waste stream reduction.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Crew Supervision

  • Assist the Work Program Office (WPO) with recruitment and orientation of student crew members, provide safety training in compliance with OSHA standards, and vehicle and equipment training for use of a cardboard baler, trash compactor, forklift, tractor, and industrial mixer.
  • Coordinate, communicate and monitor student work schedules, approve student time cards by payroll schedule deadlines; and plan for and delegate appropriate tasks to student crew members.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with students.
  • Guide students through the learning and performance goals and evaluations process in a timely manner, mentor students to support their professional and educational development.
  • Attend WPO supervisor orientation, retreat and trainings.
  • Collaborate with the staff of the WPO to problem solve any student crew issues that may arise.

Manage and maintain recycling and solid waste operations

  • Oversee routine servicing and maintenance of all campus compost, recycling and waste pick up stations and signage in collaboration with other departments, ensure pick up pavilions are kept clean and orderly, and all trash/recycling pick-ups are sorted appropriately.
  • Maintain and operate static, forced aeration composting facility, in addition to ongoing maintenance of industrial strength mixer, and hydrostatic tractor; complete required testing and annual compliance inspections with the NC Department of Environmental Quality.
  • Direct and oversee waste stream management, delegate tasks and projects to crew members.
  • Keep records of waste weight data, to complete an annual weight data report, maintain and update Hazmat log and storage needs.
  • Direct and delegate the workflow to sort and organize the Free Store.

Set strategic direction for the Recycling and Solid Waste department

  • Establish and implement policies and procedures for the Recycling and Waste department, including departmental goals and objectives that align with the strategic plan of the College, as directed by the Director of Facilities.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with staff, supervisors and leaders, specifically facilities/maintenance, farm, garden, and residence life staff to address and manage campus composting, recycling, surplus and waste.
  • Research new ideas/methods in relation to recycling and solid waste management.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, the WPO and greater community, to educate and contribute to campus initiatives about waste management and environmental issues.

Resource Management and Administrative Support

  • Develop, maintain, and work within a realistic budget, with specific attention to vendors for ongoing waste management services, special projects and department needs.
  • Collect and submit all recurring bills to accounts payable in addition to check requests in accordance with the procedures through Administration and Finance.
  • Respond to community and campus inquiries through phone, email and interpersonal interactions, communicating in a professional and timely manner.
  • Create, maintain and update department records, including but not limited to documents, spreadsheets and databases.

Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of two years supervisory experience required, preferably supervising students.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License with no restrictions required, experience driving a forklift or other heavy equipment, highly desirable.
  • Must have OSHA 24 hour HAZWOPER certification, or be willing to obtain certification within introductory period of employment.
  • Knowledge of recycling, solid waste control, hazardous waste management, chemical usage and safety precautions required.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills required.
  • Basic computer skills required, including documents, spreadsheets, database use, and file management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with variety of constituencies including students, faculty, and colleagues; ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.
