The Graphic Design program at Western Carolina University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in Graphic Design to begin Fall 2020 at the rank of assistant or associate professor (a maximum of 2 years university service is negotiable towards tenure for previously tenured faculty. Appointments with tenure are not available).

Situated in the School of Art and Design, the Graphic Design program merges innovative graphic design with print, digital and interactive media into a dynamic interdisciplinary curriculum. Students are expected to learn an expanded definition of design, a wide range of process-oriented skills, conceptual project development, formal experimentation, critical thinking, and to practically apply and expand upon this learning through an internship experience.

Located in the heart of the western Carolina mountains WCU is a regional, comprehensive university that emphasizes diversity, community engagement and collaboration with partners from business, industry, nonprofit sectors, health care fields, arts and cultural organizations, and other educational institutions.

This position seeks candidates with interdisciplinary design and art experience who are able to teach a variety of courses in print, emerging technologies, and digital design practices. Ideal candidates will be conversant in both historical and contemporary issues within the discipline, and will be able to connect design practice to issues relevant to global and community concerns. In addition to teaching undergraduate studio and lecture classes the position entails curriculum development, service to the program, school, college, and university, and continued research/creative scholarship. Candidates should have both broad and specialized knowledge in technologies, techniques, and practices in the digital and print spheres, and a minimum of three years of undergraduate teaching in the area of graphic design.

Minimum Qualifications

•MFA, MDes or equivalent terminal degree from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

•Evidence of design expertise through professional experience or design achievement through peer review, as demonstrated through application materials.
•Demonstrated expertise in typography working with print and digital media.
•Demonstrated expertise in design utilizing print and emerging interactive technologies.
•Degree emphasis in Design related field.
•Professional experience in area of design expertise.
•Teaching experience.
•Knowledge of issues of professional practice.
•Commitment to working effectively with diverse students, faculty and staff, and cultivating equitable and inclusive working and learning environments.
