DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Named for environmentalist, nature writer, and Sierra Club founder John Muir, and inspired by his remarkable life, John Muir College of UC San Diego stresses the spirit of individual choice and responsibility within the framework of a welcoming and supportive community. Muir was the second college to be founded at UC San Diego and admitted its first students in 1967. Muir is a special place where generations of students have felt recognized and valued as individuals and experienced a strong sense of belonging within this large research university.

The College’s motto, “Celebrating the Independent Spirit,” recognizes both our namesake John Muir and the achievements of our talented and enterprising students and alumni. POSITION OVERVIEW

Under direction of the Dean of Student Affairs, the Assistant Dean is responsible for the development, assessment and management of student life programs and activities that foster positive student development and learning for both new and continuing students. The Assistant Dean provides supervision for the Coordinator of Student Activities and the Coordinator for Non-Resident Students and ensures Muir College student activities, student organizations, and student programs meet the needs of Muir College students and are reflective of John Muir's vision, theme and values.

The Assistant Dean oversees student leadership development programs and large-scale Muir College programs such as leadership retreats. Additionally, the Assistant Dean advises individual students and student organizations, implements student conduct procedures, and acts for the Dean in their absence.The Assistant Dean also has a variety of administrative responsibilities, including specified campus-wide obligations. The Assistant Dean contributes significantly to the development of student affairs programs that complement and enrich the academic vision of the College and that foster an active, involved, and contributing College community.

  • This position involves attendance at and participation in an extensive array of student activities and programs, many of which occur on evenings and weekends.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong knowledge of Student Affairs/Student Life specialization. Proven understanding of national trends and best practices in student leadership and development theories, models and philosophies, as well as the ability to effectively organize learning opportunities that are consistent with stages of student development.

  • Proven knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Ability to assess and mediate individual and group conflicts using basic counseling skills that include, but are not limited to, listening, reflecting, and summarizing.

  • Working experience interacting in sensitive situations with individuals from a wide range of academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds. Knowledge and skill in making sound independent judgement, maintaining a calm and professional demeanor, and promoting civil and professional communication.

  • Demonstrated experience in staffing practices, including goal setting, supervision, recruitment, hiring, training, motivation, and evaluation of staff and student employees.

  • Familiarity with and understanding of student needs and concerns. The ability to research, evaluate, assess, and find solutions for changing student needs.

  • Demonstrated experience working cooperatively, efficiently, and effectively with a wide range of constituents, including students, family members, staff, and faculty.

  • Strong interpersonal, group, cross-cultural communication, and leadership skills. Ability to lead and to promote leadership among diverse student populations, and to facilitate effective group activities.

  • Thorough effectiveness in planning, organizing, implementing, and coordinating creative, successful, well attended social, cultural and educational programs, activities and events.

  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Ability to meet deadlines, to work effectively individually and as part of a team, and to remain flexible in a strong service and results oriented environment while providing imagination and creative solutions.

  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance. A working knowledge of assessment strategies, including student learning outcomes.

  • Strong abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills. Knowledge and skill in the management and administration of budgets, personnel, and facilities. Skilled in problem solving and decision making that represents the best interests of the institution, and the students it serves.

  • Strong knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Proven level of commitment to regularly update and maintain technology skills.

  • Demonstrated knowledgeable of statewide and national non-resident related issues, trends and best practices. Ability to develop, interpret, and apply university policies and procedures, in consultation with higher level professionals and/or management.
