The School of Communication and Multimedia Studies at Florida Atlantic University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Social Media and Digital Cultures to begin in Fall 2020. We are an interdisciplinary entity with two BA tracks, along with MA and MFA programs, committed to connecting critical studies, historical research, and media practice. We value candidates who can build on those ties.
This hire accommodates the majors that make us the fastest growing program in the college, and allows us to invest in an emerging field. To that end, the position is open to a range of specialties, but we are interested in candidates whose scholarship and teaching can engage multiple areas of the School, namely media/film studies, communication studies, and media production/practice. The search committee will be very receptive to scholars whose teaching and research or creative production addresses the relationship between technology and society, such as digital inequalities and algorithmic bias. Possible areas of specialization include:
- Platform studies
- Infrastructure studies
- Data and algorithms
- Digital publics and networks
- Rhetorical and strategic uses of social media
- Human-computer or computer-mediated interaction
- Game studies
Faculty in the School have a record of collaboration with The Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering (I-SENSE), established at FAU in early 2015 to provide technological support and serve as an interdisciplinary hub for research, education, and service initiatives across academic units. The initiative is part of the Sensing and Smart Systems pillar of FAU’s Strategic Plan for the Race to Excellence.
We also welcome applicants who can contribute to the curriculum of the new MS in Data Analytics. A successful applicant may also choose to leverage the program’s proximity to the emerging hub of extended reality innovations in the region.
