The Penn Wharton Budget Model (PWBM) is a non-partisan, research-based initiative that provides accurate, accessible and transparent economic analysis of public policy.

Job Description

Penn Wharton Budget Model anticipates a staff opening in 2020 for economists with a strong interest in applied research to assess the economic and revenue effects of current and proposed policies affecting domestic and international policy areas. We are seeking candidates with a background in Applied Microeconomics, especially in the areas of labor, public, education, and health economics. Applicants should have an interest in applied, policy-oriented research. An ideal team member will combine insights from economic theory with large datasets to aid policy analysis through empirical research or modeling and simulation work. Staff economists are encouraged to publish their research findings in professional journals. A PhD in Economics required, but ABD candidates expecting a doctorate in 2020 are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Using model, generate reports related to tax reform, immigration, and other public policies.
  • Create, as well as use, various econometric modelling techniques to develop forecasts
  • Work with the team to create large scale economic/financial models
  • Understand and interpret data. Analyzing data to test the effectiveness of current policies.

Qualifications

  • A PhD in Economics required, but ABD candidates expecting a doctorate in 2020 are encouraged to apply; 3 - 5 years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Excellent research, writing and analytical skills required.

  • Some Python and/or C# programming experience desirable.

  • Strong interest in public economics and policy.

The Penn Wharton Budget Model (PWBM) is a non-partisan, research-based initiative that provides accurate, accessible and transparent economic analysis of public policy. Besides being non-partisan, we are non-normative, in that we do not make policy recommendations. Instead, the intention of the PWBM is to be the honest broker of analysis working at the intersection of business and policy to help policy makers, the public, and businesses make fact-based decisions. PWBM has been influential in many key recent policy discussions, including tax reform, infrastructure, universal basic income, debt and Social Security.
