DepartmentReporting directly to the Director, this position is the most senior non‐academic position at the Institute. The Manager is responsible for a broad range of highly confidential and sometimes sensitive strategic administrative duties including the administrative and operational management of UTIAS. Reporting to the Director, the Manager is responsible for planning, developing and providing overall operational management required to support the Institute’s research, teaching and communications and outreach events. Under the direction of the Director, the Manager identifies and responds to the long and short-term objectives and priorities and ensures they are carried out efficiently and effectively. The Manager conducts confidential research as requested by the Director and compiles summaries or briefs on issues such as strategic planning, policy, labour relations, human resources including planning for work stoppages and maintaining contingency plans for core administrative services. This position manages and coordinates all aspects of administrative support for the various administrative office and units in UTIAS. This includes supervising staff and supporting all academic human resources activities ensuring compliance with University policies and procedures and liaising with appropriate offices. As well, this position establishes administrative policies and procedures and is responsible for implementation of these policies and daily operations and management of the various administrative offices at UTIAS. In collaboration with the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering Advancement Office, the Manager participates in outreach initiatives by researching, developing and implementing strategies. This position is responsible for managing ongoing projects in the Director’s Office ensuring the highest level of proactive service to the Institute. This position develops and manages collaborative relationships with other offices at the University, including other Faculties and Central Administration, as well as with external institutions. The incumbent must be flexible and willing to respond to the changing priorities and be willing to work collaboratively in a challenging and dynamic environment. The Manager supervises a team of administrative staff.



CampusEDUCATION: University degree or an acceptable equivalent combination of educationand experience.


EXPERIENCE: Minimum of five years related experience in aUniversity/academic setting in progressively senior positions. Knowledge aboutmedia protocol, diplomacy and an excellent understanding of the University’smission and intersection with the broader community. Experience working withina Science/Engineering/Medicine organization is desirable. Experience managingstaff in a unionized environment. Knowledge of University of Torontoorganizational structure and governance is an asset.
