Department Description

Information Technology Service (ITS) leads UNC-Chapel Hill in planning, implementing and maintaining the University’s technology services. Within ITS, Communication Technologies (CommTech) designs, deploys, supports and maintains the communications, network and telephony infrastructure for the campus. The Engineering unit of CommTech is responsible for the planning, design, project management and materials management of the campus communications transport infrastructure. The Materials Management and Logistics team within Engineering is responsible for the management, financial administration and operations of a $1.6+ million-dollar and 100k+ item physical warehouse facility for the acquisition of goods and services, payment of vendors, stocking and product distribution, cost recovery, and process development for the University.

Position Description

The purpose of this position is to

  • Support the purchasing, inventory control and distribution of network and transport infrastructure products and materials

  • Perform warehouse operations including stocking, order fulfillment and auditing

  • Provide regular, standardized reports to management about warehouse operations, activities, and stock levels

  • Analyze and monitor warehouse inventory workflow effectiveness and recommend operational improvements

  • Source quotes for best pricing, availability, quality, etc
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Electronics, or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or a
- Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of networking related experience such as network design, analysis or network management; or
- Associate’s degree in Electronics or Networking Technology and one year of networking related experience: or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Journey level requires an additional one year of experience.
- Advanced level requires an additional two years of experience.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Ability to assess technologies and recommend solutions for work of moderate complexity in voice, video or data transport systems
  • Ability to professionally communicate with customers/users to understand their needs and advise on solutions
  • Ability to serve as a productive team member on a project team or manage a project task and follow established policies and processes
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, management, or engineering, or a bachelor’s degree in a communications-related field along with experience in business or information technology, telecommunications industry certifications and/or telecommunications wiring experience are strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct business with professionalism and diplomacy in a supply chain environment
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently work with vendors and distributors
  • Direct customer service experience working in a large IT organization with responsibilities for troubleshooting problems and resolving issues
  • Experience using AssetWorks AiM inventory management software or a proven ability to quickly learn new processes and software
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize MS Office, specifically Excel and Word, to produce visualizations, reports, and analyses
  • Demonstrated ability in supporting implementation and ongoing improvement of business system processes
Required Licenses/Certifications
  • Valid NC Driver’s License
  • Valid Forklift Operations Certifications or ability to obtain certification shortly after hiring
Special Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Ability to climb ladders/stairs, working in confined spaces, and repetitively lifting/moving up to 40lbs unassisted and 75-100lbs with reasonable accommodations
  • Ability to withstand temperature changes of various storage environments
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time up to approximately 30 minutes
