The Department of Surgery at The University of North Carolina is currently seeking qualified applicants for the role of Division Chief, Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery. The Division of GI Surgery is among 9 Divisions in the Department of Surgery. The Division currently includes faculty members that provide a broad array of clinical services for patients with general surgery, upper GI, and lower GI disease, with an emphasis on bariatrics, hernia, and IBD. In addition, the Division of GI Surgery maintains a minimally invasive surgery fellowship. Candidates will be expected to have demonstrated excellence in all three traditional academic missions of clinical practice, education, and research, as evidenced by experience, outcomes and references. The candidate must have the ability to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment, promote teamwork and learning, and lead by example. Candidates may have experience/training either upper GI/minimally invasive surgery or colorectal surgery.

The incoming Chief will be responsible for partnering with the Chair of the Department Surgery to promote a collegial work environment that enhances clinical growth and academic development while advancing research activities consistent with the growth of clinical programs. The selected candidate will be a strategic leader who will promote a strong culture of institutional stewardship throughout UNC Health systems, including a strong commitment to effective business operations. The Department of Surgery offers potential candidates a uniquely supportive practice environment with an emphasis on quality patient care, research, teaching, individual career development, and collaboration among faculty members. Salary and level of appointment will be based upon experience and qualifications.

Educational Requirements

Prospective candidates must have an MD degree.

Qualifications and Experience

Board Certified in General Surgery with demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a strong track record of interdisciplinary collaboration, evidence of promoting diversity, and involvement in quality improvement. Chosen candidate should either have a current North Carolina Medical License or be eligible for application.
