Academic Technology Specialist

The Academic Technology Specialist is primarily responsible for oversight and coordination of the Starfish Early Alert Retention system, and Form Stack coordination. The Technology Specialist works with faculty and staff to ensure the proper functioning of all desired course content in the learning management system and all related systems. The Technology Specialist assists faculty in the utilization of synchronous courseware and related technology. Also works with college staff to integrate the learning management system and related systems college-wide. The Technology Specialist maintains and supports any other academic software as needed including course evaluation software, course cancellation software, and Starfish student retention software.

1. Qualifications:

A. Educational Background: Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Technology, Educational Technology, or related field.

B. Experience: Minimum of one year experience with learning management systems. Experience with maintaining and supporting educational software (for example Blackboard, Starfish, Canvas, D2L, Collaborate, Voice thread, Captivate, Camtasia, Chalk & Wire, Blackboard Connect, course evaluation software.) Experience with student information systems (especially Datatel) desired. Experience with the Adobe suite of products desired. Experience working with faculty on innovative solutions for pedagogy and course delivery preferred.

C. Special Skills: Ability to work with heterogeneous student population to provide a variety of support services designed to ensure students completion and retention efforts. Excellent listening, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. The Technical Specialist will work primarily at the Canandaigua campus, and may travel to the campus centers. The work schedule varies daily and includes both daytime and evening hours at 37.5 hours a week.

2. Essential Functions:

  • Starfish Oversight & Coordination
  • Develop and run queries to track retention, career, transfer, and educational planning efforts; pull data from Starfish into spreadsheets; manipulate data; produce biannual reports on system usage
  • Create and maintain surveys, track student usage, provide data for reports, and update internal/external web content
  • Respond to student inquiries and requests for help within Starfish; Connect students to appropriate resources based on needs and level of urgency
  • Provide outreach and implement interventions for at-risk students (e.g. students with 3+ flags, excessive absences, etc.)
  • Work collaboratively with end user offices (e.g., Academic Advising, Campus Centers, Academic Support, etc.) to ensure that Starfish is responding to the needs of that office in relationship to the strategic mission for the product.
  • Develop and implement strategic marketing and communications plan to encourage and improve overall system usage and survey response rates
  • Keep apprised of system updates, new modules, and best practices surrounding Starfish Early Alert and Starfish Connect
  • Formstack Coordination
  • Under the direction of the AVP, work to integrate Formstack into processes and systems
  • Serve as the primary creator of forms/surveys on the software
  • Monitor usage, and provide analytics to the directors on forms being used
  • Research and provide direction to the AVP on trends and uses with software
  • Online Learning
  • Provide one-to-one technical support for faculty in solving technical issues in web-enhanced, hybrid and fully on-line courses.
  • Provide training for faculty and staff in the use of the learning management system and related software and technologies.
  • Research and become fluent with the technical aspects involved in the use of the learning management system and related software and technologies.
  • Support the integration of the learning management system and related software into college wide systems.
  • Support the integration of third party software into the learning management system
  • Other Technology Support
  • Inventory and maintain department hardware including all laptops and peripherals
  • Manage class cancellation and outreach software.
  • Troubleshoot issues with synchronous course software and hardware.
  • Integrate and support application services from Open SUNY.
  • Support course evaluation software.
  • Support face-to-face instructional technology as needed.
  • Perform any other duties necessary for the effective function of the department as assigned.
  • The starting salary is $42,758 and commensurate with experience.
