Overview

The Council on Science and Technology (CST) at Princeton University seeks a bold, creative StudioLab Artistic/Technical Manager who will advance CST initiatives and activities by developing, implementing, and supporting relevant programming that builds capacity of CST’s StudioLab.

 

The Council on Science and Technology fosters education, research, and intellectual exchange that deepen and broaden understanding, experience, and appreciation of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The Council partners with engineering, mathematics, natural sciences, the arts, humanities, and social sciences to:

 

● Provide opportunities for students, faculty, staff and the broader community that enhance their understanding and use of STEM content, concepts, skills, and habits of mind

● Relate STEM to everyday life, culture, and public affairs to cultivate an informed, empowered, and engaged citizenry

● Explore the intersections across STEM, the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

 

The StudioLab is the CST’s creative technology lab that supports innovative courses, projects and research that explore the intersections of STEM with the arts, humanities, and social sciences. The recently-renovated, flexible 2500 sq. ft. space is used to cultivate and advance collaboration across the disciplines. The StudioLab technology and equipment currently include: motion capture, theater lighting, virtual reality, a sound system, projection, sprung flooring, wheeled robots, 3D printers, a laser cutter, a CNC milling machine, a vinyl cutter, an embroidery machine, sewing machines, soldering equipment, Kinect, Arduinos, whiteboard walls, workstations, and flexible furniture. The StudioLab is committed to "serious play" and creates a safe space for learners of all levels and experiences to explore and engage. Some recent events and programs associated with the StudioLab include StudioLab Cafés, which allow students to lead and/or participate in artistic explorations, "Hack the Drag," a weekend-long hackathon with the aim of providing a safe space for culturally relevant STEM-making and teaching through wearable electronics and drag, participation in MakerFaire 2018, and workshops in the Princeton Public Library. StudioLab courses include Storytelling with Technology for Performance, which explores how we can we use technology to enhance, frame, or reveal new perspectives on stories told, and Transformations in Engineering and the Arts, in which students explore the parallels and intersections of design/composition in engineering and the arts.

Responsibilities

The StudioLab Artistic/Technical Manager reports to the Executive Director of the CST. Specific responsibilities include to

• Brainstorm, explore, plan, implement, and support programming for the StudioLab;
• Provide technical and creative direction, supervision, and training to students employed by the StudioLab or affiliated with the CST;
• Participate in the mentoring of projects supported by the StudioLab;
• Contribute content to the CST website, social media handles, and other publications;
• Maintain the equipment in the StudioLab so that it is functional and safe;
• Participate in the administration of CST by attending staff meetings and engaging in CST-sponsored events;
• Assist the Assistant Director, StudioLab Initiatives and CST Executive Director as needed.

Qualifications

• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and a high degree of professionalism and initiative
• Ability to think creatively, work independently and function effectively as part of a team
• Knowledge and experience with some of the following: theater technology / technology for performance (such as lighting, projection, motion capture, sound), rapid prototyping (Arduino, 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC), and creative technology (computer programming for creative applications, interactive media, robotics & design projects)
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to handle multiple varied and competing priorities
• Willingness to work flexible hours in order to accommodate programs and trainings
• A degree in an area of science, engineering, technology, and/or the arts with a focus on intersections and creativity
• Experience with and enthusiasm for STEM education/outreach
